The French named it Nouvelle Orléans after the city of Orléans in France; and somebody eventually translated it into English. But the French still call it Nouvelle Orléans today.

New Orleans is named after a French city named Orleans. When it was settled the founders Iberville and Beinville named it in honour of the Duke of Orleans, hence the new city's name, New Orleans!!!

There was/is a city in France called Orleans. When French settlers established an outpost on the lower Mississippi River, they called it "New" Orleans to honor their home town.
