The charges against the defendant are dropped.
Adjudicated Guilty - Conviction: The defendant has been found guilty of the charges.
Adjudication Withheld - Non-conviction: The court does not give a final judgment regarding the case. The defendant is given probation, a program or community service in which they have a specified amount of time to complete. If the defendant complies, the case may be dismissed, depending on the county/state. If they do not dismiss in that particular county/state, then the disposition remains adjudication withheld and the case is closed. However, if the defendant is found in violation, the case disposition may be changed and the defendant can be found in guilt.

Analogous to probation before judgment in MD.
A person can plea guilty, but final entry of judgment is withheld during a probationary period.
If the probationary period is successfully completed, then the case is dismissed.
Another analogy is stet, where a case can be placed on the inactive docket pending certain conditions. Once those conditions are satisfied, the state can drop the case. In a stet, no plea has been entered.

It means a conviction will not be entered on a person's record. It generally also means no jail time & no fine, tho' there may be court costs or some sort of probation conditions may attach. "Withholds" are a very important benefit. It means no conviction on one's record; that a future offense will not be charged as a second offender; no deportation for a green card holder; retention of all civil rights, incl. right to possess a weapon; retention of licenses that would be revoked on conviction.
