If his coat is just dull and you want to shine it up there are a few things you can do. First go get a high protein condition, like an oatmeal conditioner and bathe him with that. Let the conditioner sit on the fur for a few minutes before rinsing. Another thing you can do is put a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil in the dogs food. Although it will take about a month for you to see a difference, it will make his fur shiner. Last piece of advice, you can take the dog to the vet and ask for a pill called Derm Caps ES. It is a concentrated fatty acid dietary supplement for dogs that help keep the skin from being dry and helps promote a shiny coat. My dog has naturally dry skin and it dulls her coat, so the vet gave us the Derm Caps ES, and it has worked wonders. Good Luck :)
P.S. My dog, that takes the Derm Caps is a 3 year old PitBull.:)

try brushing the dog with a short stiff bristle brush, then bath it witha conditioning dog shampoo. Also they sell vitamin oil at vets for animals skin and coat. You are supposed to put a tablespoon on their food and it makes there coat nice and shiny. However if weight is not a problem with the dog then you can try just giving it a regular spoon (cereal size or whatever your "regular" spoon is") of butter or margarine every day. Also could use a tablespoon of bacon fat drizzled over food. Do this for a week or so and the coat will begin improving. If the dog is over weight though dont use butter/bacon grease, they are way to fattening if you dog already has weight problem. You can reduce the amount of fat given after a week or so to about half of what you were givin and that should do the trick.

You need to get the dog on a premium dog food diet. Make sure the first ingredient is not corn but is meat. Do not bathe the dog more than once per month unless you really need to. Brush with a zoom groom (you can buy at petsmart or on line). The hair will eventually shed out and the new coat coming in will be much better textured. You can also take some leave in conditioner like you spray on your own hair. Cut it 50/50 with water and spray it on - lightly!! He grew this coat in response to the conditions that he lived in to protect his skin. Think about your own skin. If you are outside in the weather a lot, your skin gets coarser. When you stay inside of long periods of time, your skin gets softer - but not overnight. It gets there gradually. You will notice that has he sheds and gets new coat, it will come in shiny and soft. The diet, though, is the key. Get Purina One, Purina ProPlan, Nutro, Science Diet, Iams, Eukanuba, or some other similar QUALITY food. Take it from me (I show a long coated breed) - food is EVERYTHING when it comes to coat!!!

If you try doing a web search there's certain things you can feed your dog to make their coat shiny, but maybe you should take him or her to a vet. Sometimes if the coat is kind of dull that means there's something wrong with the dog.

Raw eggs are correct. Nothing wrong with raw eggs. You might also look into the dietetic content of your dog food. Don't go apenuts overboard on proteins though (especially with older of less-active dogs. Too much protein can cause other health troubles for an older dog. Just bust an egg in the evening portion. Might even just splat the egg- eggshell and all- in the food. The calcium is good for the dog too. I had a dog that loved crunching the whole egg. But I have had two lately who sucked out the goodie and always left the shell behind! Experiment.

As one who has done dog rescue, I can say that you need to buy a good quality lamb and rice formula food. No cheap crap like sams club, or kmart brands. Break an egg every cuople of days and mix it up like you would for a scrambled egg. Pour over the food, and let the critter eat it. This is cheap, but will do great for his coat. When shampooing, use a oatmeal based doggie shampoo.

Try a better dog food if you haven't already. Vegetable oil and one egg on the food should help. Also try a moisterizing conditioner after giving your dog a bath. Use a slicker on the coat everyday to remove dead hairs to encourage growth of new hair. If nothing works, I would consult a vet.

It's not necessarily from being outside without a bath, it can be from a poor diet try science diet healthy coat formula or similar brand, it can also be from parisites like worms and mites
give the dog a bath in a mite killing shampoo

Salmon oil is great for dogs. Also if you give him a bath, use a conditioner too (but don't bath him often if his skin and coat are in poor condition).
