Most Catholics do. We realize the Bible is not a science manual. I get annoyed too by the fundamentalists who insist evey word in the Bible must be taken literally.

Peace!

The truth is that, whether you like it or not, it is still a theory; but it is true that we do accept that gravity exists.
Some of us Christians, do not have a problem with the theory of Evolution, because, I see it as just being a part of God's plan for creation. I do not think that the Creation Stories in the Bible (and there are actually 2 different versions - a fact that some Christians deny) were meant to be taken literally, they were symbolic accounts.
Some Christians, I think have difficulties with the Theory of Evolution because they try to take every word in the Bible literally, and the Creation stores to not tie up with evolution. It would, therefore undermine their faith if they were to accept it.
But my faith is stronger than that.

Hope that helps and God Bless you :>)

First, not all Christians think that Evolution is just a theory. I am a Christian, and I think that evolution works, A species can fork into another species given time and the proper conditions. This had been observed in nature. If this is how one defines evolutions, sure. I am for it.

But I do reject that abiogenesis. This is the theory that life spontaneously started from a "primordial soup." Darwin himself in the original edition of Origin of Species invoked God as the author of life saying, "There is a grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved." . In the second edition, the editors removed this statement, and Darwin regretted it saying in a letter, "It is mere rubbish to talk about the origin of life; one might as well talk about the origin of matter." Darwin was not saying it rubbish to talk about God creating life, but rather to speculate about how life started scientifically. He is saying that one cannot possibly think about the origins of life because it because any theory about its origin is empirically improvable. "Who started the fire?" one might ask. Nobody knows empirically Darwin would say...lightning? Friction? A volcano? God? It seems then that Darwin's purpose was not to show where life came from, but how species come into being.

Sure, evolution (speciation, natural selection, etc.) works. It's a natural process that has been empirically proven and observed. I have no problem with that. But I don't want to confuse it with theories for the origin of life. They are two separate issues.

Hello,

Don't tar us all with the same brush ! I don't subscribe to creationism as I believe that is just a story. As for Evolution being proven - how has it? Did you know that as well as classic evolution there are 7 or 8 variations on that theme?!?! I think that Darwin ceratinly set us thinking on the right path. I'm Roman Catholic and was taught that Evolution was the best explanation for the way life on Earth developed. I don't believe that anything on Earth is absolute and 'set in stone'.

What planet are you living on mate? Why don't you just wake up and see the light.

Ok get this, I am a Christian and, whoa, wait for, !!! I also believe that evolution happened.

Perhaps if you weren't so blatantly ignorant you would also believe that nearly every christian in science believes that it is true. In fact it does not contradict Christianity in any way, and also it is not actually fact. Yes it is not a fact, so if you have the faith to believe in something that you don't know is definitely true, why can't you leave me alone for being a Christian?

there are no FACTS that prove eveolution. there are no recorded occurances of evolution, where something changed from one generation to the next. and as someone else already asked, why do primates still exist if humans evolved from primates. the THEORY of evolution is flawed based on primates. by the way, i think that gravity is in fact NOT a theory. notice the source listed below (wikipedia) calls gravity newtons LAW.

Some Christians *do* believe in evolution. Being a Christian and believing in evolution aren't mutually exclusive.

Those that don't either haven't read up on what evolution is (why are there still monkeys if we evolved from them) and are basing their opinion on brainwashing and ignorance.

Others simply believe that faith supercedes science and scientific theory.

Because christians don't accept fact, they like to believe in things that don't exist or can't be proved, it gives them a feeling of importance or value, it implies a school playground mentality of " I know something you don't". In 1000 years time the equivalent cretins will be worshipping Harry Potter as the one true god.
Sometimes I hope there is a Hell and all the Christians, Jews and Muslims will end up there for making Earth a fundementally stupid place to be.

Proven fact? Hogwash. We all know that the Earth and the entire universe was created 6000 years ago, complete with countless pieces of evidence---as it turns out, false pieces of evidence, just props---that the Earth existed for billions of years earlier, including layer after layer of fossils. All these things God put there...uh, why? Just so that all the evidence would overwhelmingly point to the universe being billions of years old, and point to their being a long evolutionary history for animals, including countless steps on the path to human. Why would any God who created the universe 6000 years ago go to all that trouble to trick us like that? Either he DID do this, in which case he is one freaky trickster. Or, the universe is as old and life evolved as the evidence indeed suggests, and God does not end up being some oddball creepy practical jokester. That is, just to be clear, any Christian really wanting to argue that the Earth is just 6000 years old, and that evolution didn't produce us and all the other varied life, has to answer the question, "Why did God go to all the endless trouble of making it LOOK true that the universe is much much older and that we evolved just like other animals?"

The relationship between science and religion takes many forms. Generally speaking, religion and science use different methods in their effort to ascertain truth. The scientific method relies on an objective approach to measure, calculate and describe the natural/physical/material universe. Religious methods are typically more subjective, relying on authority, intuition, belief in the supernatural, individual experience, or a combination of these to understand the universe.

Not only Christians, but all faiths have basis on the Bible especially the old testament. If they were to accept Evolution they would have to accept the Bible is false so they will never accept it.

To the Do-nut who said if we evolved from monkeys... we never evolved from monkeys (you might have though) We evolved from "the missing link" as it is referred to. The thing that man evolved from on one plane and monkeys on another. The fact that virtually all animals have four limbs, one head, two eyes two ears and so on is quite significant proof we evolved together although differently from an original concept. We even have a spinal bone structure which was designed originally to continue into a tail.

Fish/mammals and insects are slightly different although many have the same traits...

Evolution compared to a completely farcical fairy tale. I know which I put my faith in..........
