Three men go to a cheap motel, and the desk clerk charges them a sum of $30.00 for the night. The three of them split the cost ten dollars each. Later the manager comes over and tells the desk clerk that he overcharged the men, since the actual cost should have been $25.00. The manager gives the bellboy $5.00 and tells him to give it to the men. The bellboy, however, decides to cheat the men and pockets $2.00, giving each of the men only one dollar.
Now each man has paid $9.00 to stay for the night, and 3 x $9.00 = $27.00. The bellboy has pocketed $2.00. But $27.00 + $2.00 = $29.00. Where is the missing $1.00? WTF?

Each man pays nine dollars. 9x3=27
Should have cost 25. 27-25=2 The two dollars for the bellboy.
They paid ten each 30-27=3 The change.

If each man paid 10 dollars, and that means original rate is only thirty.
But it isn't in this case, the motel says they are only keeping twenty five.
So 30-25=5!
And the bellboy keeps the two dollars before giving it back to them.
So 5-2=3!
And Voila!
3 DOLLARS REMAINING!!!!!
So then you trial that problem: 3(the amount being given back to the men)+2( The amount the bellboy kept)+25( the normal motel charge) =30dollars.

what you do is, take the $10 for each person, $30. then subtract the $5, and you have $25. then you add the $2 that the bellboy took out, and add the $3 he gave back to them. in other words 10 x 3=30-5=25+2=27+3=30.

x² = x+6 x² - x - 6 = 0 (x - 3)(x + 2) = 0 So x = 3 or - 2 x² + 2x = 0 x(x + 2) = 0 So x = 0 or - 2 60 = x² - 4x x²- 4x - 60 = 0 (x - 10)(x + 6) = 0 So x = 10 or -6 4x = x² - 40 5 x² - 4x - 40 5 = 0 (x - 9)(x + 5) = 0 So x = 9 or -5 -6x = x² + 9 x² + 6x + 9 = 0 (x + 3)(x + 3) = 0 (x + 3)² = 0 So x = -3 -15=x² + 8x x² + 8x +15 = 0 (x + 5)(x + 3) = 0 So x = -5 or -3 -9x = x² + 14 x² + 9x + 14 = 0 (x + 7)(x + 2) = 0 So x = -7 or - 2 wish that enables. =D

There is no missing £1.00. The men paid £27, the hotel got £25 and the bellboy had £2.00.
25 + 2 = 27

Duh!
It's $27.00 and $3.00 not $2.00 (so it does equal $30.00)
It's the bellboy that kept $2.00 so why would you add that to the $27.00? you'd add the $3.00 dollars the men got to the $27.00 if you understand what i'm trying to explain.

This connundrum is quite perplexing, good question. Let's see: $10 each, -$1 =$9 each. Umm, sorry thinking out loud... It makes sense, but the math doesn't add up... I'm sorry, I can't figure it out. I'll watch this question and edit if I get it.
Edit: Oh yeah, it's three dollars, not two. You don't add the stolen money, you add the money given back.
