I am a caucasian and I have done some extensive travel. When I was in India the men would stare at me, not just a glance but an obvious stare and sometimes I would have about 6 men standing in front of me staring. Now I'm no beauty queen and I'm no spring chicken and I know that I am not the only one that has experienced this. I just want a very honest answer to this question. What are you Indian men thinking about when you stare so hard at foreign women visiting your country. If there is someone else besides an Indian who has an answer to this question then please feel free.

I must also add that I loved India and would go back regardless. I always dress appropriately in the countries I visit. I would never wear scanty clothes etc where it is obvious that it is not acceptable.
I am not American.

The men stare at u because u are like visiting and if u are white it's because they don't see white womans a lot often. In india most of them are balck indians. If u are unknown they are probably saying "where does she come from i never saw her". That's why.

I'm an Indian girl but I was born in the US and have lived here all of my life. I visit there about every 2 years. Every time I visit, everyone looks at me like I am from another country. To them, I am American, which makes me completely different in their eyes. I don't dress the same, I don't act the same so they automatically know I am different. I feel as though people that live in India are very intrigued by Americans. There is so much of the American culture shown in their clothing and culture now but most will never be able to afford a flight to the US since poverty is so high. This why they stare. They stare at our hair, clothes, how we act etc. They are intrigued and another big reason is that in India, staring is not considered rude as it is in the US. It is okay to stare and invade personal space. Where as in America it would be considered rude, in their culture it is competely normal. Hope this helps!

I don't think it's just at American women, that they stare, I'm an Indian girl, and i KNOW i'm not pretty and i still get stared at. Sometimes i think they just know that u're from a foreign country, and it doesn't have to be the way u dress or ur skin tone. Even if i dress Indian, they stare lilke they've never seen an Indian girl before. I think apparel (ie: watches, jewelery) can show if u're rich or not or if u're from a foreign country. Who knows!

Men in India stare not just at foreigners but anyone who stands out in the crowd. Be it a girl, boy, woman or man. Ask any male colleagues/friends of your country about their experience. I am sure they will also say that they have experienced the stare. Even among Indians the Indians who look different, dress different, who stand out are also stared.
I agree with one of the answers, staring or looking is common, but i do not agree that it is not considered rude, yes it is still considered rude. There are so many differences in the culture. Like blowing the nose in the public when you have a cold is not considered rude in the west, but it is RUDE in india. Still, some Indians do it, because they do not care about what others think. Similary staring is rude, but people who do it, they do it out of curiosity.
Most people look at anyone beautiful(Indian or Foreign, white or black)

Most answers are good, but I would like to add my observations on the subject.
Are you sure only men stared at you? You found out because you were also observing them, at least few may have thought you were staring also.
Staring is not considered bad or rude in many culture, it is a complement. India had at one time 750 kingdom. This translates in to many culture.
Have you ever stared at any one? Did you even knew you were engaged in such activities on on-set, without some one pointing out or after a while.
The people who engage in such activity seldom realise that.
People stare because they wonder, when some one wonders about some one, they cannot take their eye off of that person.

It could be what you were wearing. Attire that is acceptable at home (shorts, halter tops etc.) is usually not the norm in many parts of the world. It may have nothing to do with your race or color. A Chinese friend of mine visited Bangalore markets wearing shorts, people (men and women) gave her the looks. An Indian woman in a sari covering her head in an American beach will get the same 'looks'. When you are in a foreign country, try to blend in as much as possible. You will be amazed by how pleasant travel becomes.

My mom is caucasian and my dad is indian. When my parents had there wedding in India my mom, who has blonde hair and blue eyes was stared at and poked. This is because they are not used to seeing Americans that look so differnt than them. DOnt take it personally.

in my view for indians foreigners specially white skin is an attraction. i.e. how they wear clothes how they move freely how persons of opposite sex meet each other & behave freely . In India & specially in villages living standard of women is very different from foreign women. In india it is assumed that foreign women are less bother to expose her. For example at one of religious place in rajasthan India (Pushkar) one foreign lady became nude & took bath in tank in the tample at public place. Further she walked in nude position through market road to her hotel. These sights are rare in India. many such instance takes place in India by foreign women. This is the main reason that indian men have more attraction towords white skin foreign women.

You should consider it a honor, and just behave as u would normally you do in ur own country without being predujiced, or generalize that all five fingers are equal. Everybody is different, and so are Indians too.
