Everybody refers to God as "He", which makes God a male. How do people know that God isn't a woman? I think the reason is that when the Bible was written, women weren't treated with a lot of respect. What do you think?

I don't understand why some people are getting upset by this question. It's just a question! And for Jim B, I don't HATE God...I just asked a question. The reason why I asked was just to clear this all up.

God is pure spirit...no gender, but "HIS" only son who was and is male. The first woman, Eve was the first to sin and she lead Adam into sin and so she has really ruined it for us women. From then on, all women were made to follow rather than to lead. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the "Second" Eve. Sin entered the world through Eve. And Salvation (Jesus) entered the World through another woman, Mary, the Mother of Christ.

Before Christianity and its parent religion Judaism, God often was depicted in the female sense. A Goddess giving birth to other Gods and humanity was the common belief. As we changed our society from hunter gathers, where the women primarily took care of the spiritual needs to an agricultural society, where men had more free time to devote to these pursuits Goddess became God. This is a very simplified version but it is essentially what occurred. We moved from polytheism where the primary worship was directed to a Goddess that gave birth to creation to monotheism where the one God was described as a male who created everything.
It has been speculated that Eve is a representation of an earlier Goddess and that her undoing in Genesis was a way of discounting the people who worshipped her.
My personal belief is that God is all. There is no male, female or other, there is only God. Creation is not separate we only perceive it to be with our limited perspective. The Creator is what was created as well as what created. God Is.

So a stupid christian could answer this question right.. Ok then don't read any further I wouldn't want to hurt your poor God hating eyes... The Father is a person of Spirit. He is not subject to sex. He is referred to as He because of the flesh of Christ. Jesus in His mortal ministry is male. Can you see that? The Holy Spirit is also not subject to sex.
What I can't understand is why you are so hung up by God being refereed to as Father, and He... What difference can it make? Jim

God is always refered to as being a male. I guess that's why all the priests are all male and women were not considered "worthy" of being worshiped. That's why even though they consider joining the house of God, they are considered as "sisters" and are never equal to the fathers.

God is God. You can't think of Him in human terms. He made man in his own image which leads me to think he's more of the male persuasion, but not a man. Clear as mud? Woman was created as a companion...
Genesis 5:1 "When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God."

In countless references to God in Scripture, there is clearly a consistent pattern of Him being referred to with masculine titles, nouns, and pronouns. While God is not a man, but is a Spirit, He chose a masculine form in order to reveal Himself to mankind. Likewise, Jesus Christ, who is constantly referred to with masculine titles, nouns, and pronouns, took a male form while He walked on the earth. The prophets of the Old Testament and the Apostles of the New Testament refer to both God and Jesus Christ with masculine names and titles. God chose to be revealed in this form in order for man to more easily grasp who God is. To assert that God chose a female form to be revealed to man is not consistent with the pattern established by Scripture. Again, had God chosen a feminine form, there would be more evidence in Scripture of that. That evidence simply does not exist. While God makes allowances in order to help mankind understand Him, it is important to not try to “force God into a box,” so to speak, by placing limitations on Him that are not appropriate to the nature of who He is. It has nothing to do with who wrote the bible or how women were treated.

When God manifests He (here used just for the sake of english grammar) can chose to be of male or female form. For example there are male and female deities, there is Jesus and Mother Mary.
However this is not in our terms as we relate gender to physical attributes of our bodies and emotional make-up of our mind. As God has neither, it is in terms of the principle and purpose of that form of God.
But ultimatelly God is beyond gender :)

God is a "He" because a bunch of MEN wrote the Bible. Like EVE, a woman, bit the apple instead of Adam. It's all a bunch of sexist BS anyways.

MEN wrote the book so god is a MAN. back in those days no one would ever believe that god was a woman and have any success with it. Gotta cater to the masses.

come on.....only a MAN could create the universe! haha
na.....I have heard a theory recently that God the Father is the creator of the universe/sustainer of the overall love/force. There is a female God as well and she does more of the activity like actually helping people with their problems...stuff like that.
