I just noticed it a week ago. It's vertical and not completely lateral. I haven't done anything traumatic to cause it and since I've been fixating on it, I've been having nightmares about my teeth cracking and falling out. I have straight and heathly teeth (as far as I knew) so it's really freaking me out. I am going to see a dentist as soon as my insurance kicks in... how would a dentist fix it, and is my tooth going to fall out??

SERIOUS ANSWERS PLEASE!!

Look at your teeth in a mirror while you are in the sunlight. They have ALOT of teeny tiny cracks in them. Do you chew on ice or hard candy? Don't do that. If it is just one of these normal cracks a dentist wont do anything. If it is a more significant crack, like where a filling expanded, then would have to do a crown I would imagine. You said hairline...so im thinking its the first option. I freaked out when I first noticed teeny cracks in my teeth. My mother was a dental assistant then...she told me its totally normal & dont chew ice etc.

I used to be a Dental Assistant, and I have the same problem.
You won't lose the tooth providing it is not a deep crack in the tooth, This can happen from gnawing, biting, or grinding your teeth while you sleep.
You should see your dentist just to get an x-ray and make sure the crack isn't into the nerve. Otherwise, it is a common procedure to do a root canal on this tooth.
Good Luck to you-it really doesn't sound that bad.

See a dentist as soon as you can. Your tooth can break. I don't know how they fix it, but it just happened to a friend of mine. She had a crack in the tooth, bit down on a piece of popcorn chicken, and crunch, there it went!

Just be REALLY careful about what you eat until you get to the dentist.

Maybe you have just a craze line in this tooth. Almost all teeth have them and nothing needs to be done about it. Never hurts to have it checked out though.
