Keep it under 3 minutes or people will stop listening.

The best man doesn't HAVE to make a speech. He could just thank the bridesmaids and groomsmen and then read out any telegrams and cards.
After that he can propose the toast to "The Bride and Groom".
Course if you want to do better you could always go to the best man speech website!
I like this one..........
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen - I must admit to being rather nervous about today's speech. And as it’s a family occasion, the last thing I want to do is cause offence by talking in too much detail about Paul's colourful past. I therefore decided to edit out anything that might upsetting to anyone present. So thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen, and goodnight.

My brother was the best man at my sisters wedding and he just had 2 sentences, it was short and boring, Make it at least a paragraph or two, you need something witty and something funny to say about both of them, don't forget to thank them for choosing you as best man, and a toast to the newly weds always goes well. Hope i helped a bit good luck and have fun ;-)

I got the following from a Mercedes Lackey book and it's the best speech for a marriage I've ever heard.
Now you will no longer fear the storm, for you find shelter in each other.
Now the winter cannot harm you, for you warm each other with love.
Now when strength fails, you will be the wind to each other’s wings.
Now the darkness holds no danger, for you will be the light to each other’s path.
Now you will defy despair, for you will bring hope to each other’s heart.
Now there will be no more loneliness, for there will always be a hand reaching out to aid you when all seems darkest.
Where there were two paths, now there is one.
May your days together be long upon the earth, and each day blessed with joy in each other.

Try to keep things to a minimum and do not take longer than six minutes. You just thank everyone for coming, read out cards from people that could not make it and then toast to the Bride and Groom and then all you do is eat, drink and be merry.
Good luck and have fun.

Talk about what you like about the couple. Things you remember doing with the couple. Funny stories about the groom lightens the mood too. Anything you remember or anything from your heart. They will appreciate what you have to say and the memories that you cherish. Also wish them the best and things like that. It's ok to have a cheat sheet. You will do fine, I have faith in you!!!

try confetti.co.uk - it's an online store, but they've got some excellent info on there too. My brother in law was our best man and he picked up some tips from the site and did a fantastic speech

Best thing to do is say something funny and memorable, about 5 minutes is enough. Do you have a funny story from school or his past? That is not too embaressing but enough to get a chuckle from the old dears!

the best speeches i've witnessed basically told of the couples history through the best man's eyes. the worst have been a drunk guy trying to be funny, but making an *** of himself instead.
