In fact the Germans did start using the U boat in the first WW in an tempt to blockade England , a bit in the same way as in the 2 WW but on a smaller scale.
They used 2 major types - a sub for sinking the ship
- a sub fore posing mines
In WW 2 the there more types for short range patrols, crossing the Atlantic, a model to support the attack subs with fuel and other materials, even some U boats for running the blockade to japan

This article is about the German submarine. For other uses of U-boat, see U-boat (disambiguation).

The battleship Scharnhorst is seen in the backgroundU-boat is the anglicization of the German word U-Boot (help·info), itself an abbreviation of Unterseeboot (undersea boat). The primary targets of the U-boat campaigns in both world wars were the merchant convoys bringing supplies from Canada and the United States to Europe. Austrian submarines of World War I were also known as "U-boats".

The distinction between U-boat and submarine is common in English-language usage but unknown in German where the term U-Boot refers to any submarine.

The term Uboat was coined somewhere around WWII if I'm not mistaken. It is short for "Underwater Boat", and today, we call them.... you got it...... submarines!
