If the world was convinced that some people are indeed born gay, then some would feel there is a need to protect homosexuals by the government as a designated minority class status, such as African- or Native-Americans. Slowly but surely, it seems the government is embracing this view and granting special rights to the homosexual community for what is a behaviorally based identity rather than a true genetic one.

Even if somewhere in the future a genetic link could be proven, it wouldn’t suddenly make the behavior right or acceptable to society.

Just because you were born an imbecile doesn't make the behavior right or acceptable to society.

Nor would it make it a wrong behavior. One of the reason to show it can be an inborn behavior is to silence many religious groups who tout it as a choice. But, be it choice, or born into a person, it cannot be stopped. Its a part of life now, and in the pass. We are not required by law to belive in the bible. Nor do we have to have the same dislikes as those who do. Homosexuals do need protection by the goverment. It is proven daily by the bigotry right wing religious people show. It is not right to keep jobs away from people because they are christian. Or anything else. We protect people regardless of Race, Creed, or religion. Homosexual may or may not be part of a genetic make up, but does fall under creed. Written specificly or not, we are required to treat them equally.

Since those who are oppossed to homosexuals and their life style are trying to portray it as a matter of choice, and therefor infer that they could alleviate all their problems in life by simply making a better choice, this becomes an important issue.

Personally I believe that homosexuality can be either innate (i.e. something you are born with) or acquired (a learned response). Some people are born that way and others develop that way. This, to my thinking, explains why there are effeminate male homosexuals and manly or "butch" homosexuals as well as heterosexual males who present with effeminate characteristics.

I must clarify something for you: governments are not in the process of granting "special" right for homosexuals, but moving to guarantee equal rights. What is being defined in law for gay men and women is only what heterosexuals have always enjoyed.

To prove to morons like yourself that it IS A GENETIC thing, and not some life choice that someone makes.

With your type of thinking, I would say that they have discovered a genetic cause for Down's Syndrome - but it doesnt make it right or acceptable to society - maybe we should not give them the same rights as everyone else too, right? Cuz they are retards, right?

See what I mean?

the world doesn't need to be convinced of something in order for it to be true. I've heard of lots of people knowing that they were attracted to the same sex long before they even knew what sex was. That to me is proof enough that people can be born that way. Also, love is a perfectly right and acceptable behavior. How can a person help who they fall in love with?

You HAVE to be kidding. This question does not deserve an intelligent response because obviuosly, you do not understand reason. It's small minded people like you who the gay marriage supporters are attempting to overcome. Why would you even ask a question that you have already formed a biased opinion on? You obviously don't care about the opposition's point of view.

1. Sorry to disappoint you, but you should keep up with science. Check out the spring issue of Scientific American Mind. It is genetic, and if social mores of today were not in place, the majority of people would be bisexual, with the minorities being heterosexual, and homosexual.

2. Special favors go to families that over populate (OP), adding their spouses, children and drive up health care costs. Special favors to OP who overcrowd the schoolrooms, the home owner's taxes go up to pay for the schools. Special favors go to those who hate, because they justify to themselves that it's okay to break God's commandment — thou shall not murder. That includes war.

3. That's right, when you deny health insurance to domestic partners and their children, you are in fact saying, "Too bad, I don't like you, so you can suffer with this horrible diabetes, stroke, etc. without healthcare, and die, even though you could have been saved. I feel good about myself for doing God's will of hate and not being responsible for our neighbors who struggle."

4. While you're busy with "I don't like you, in fact I'm so willing to deny your equal rights, even though you pay the same taxes, because I want to open the door wide to having my own rights taken away by setting precedence."

5. I am sorry, but some times you have to rise above your prejudice, otherwise you end up with a big 'butt bite'. You know, 'what goes around comes around'. Your last comment leads me to think that you live in a rural, unworldly area, or smalltown, obscure, USA. Get out and see the world. Yours is a small bubble.

6. You're probably familiar with what happened in Nazi Germany, because people couldn't be bothered to stand up to help the Jews, just because it wasn't their problem, eventually it visited their doors, too. I've lived long enough to see that society & rights can change in a blink. I lived through the civil rights movements of the 60's. Shameful hatred by extremely ignorant people hiding behind a cross.

7. Point being — If you feel that strongly about special rights, then let's all have the same rights. Then no one can point the finger at Heterosexuals & say that they are a financial burden to society.

8. Let's you & I give up all our specil rights for health care coverage, that includes adding a spouse, children, everything legally at our advantage, then we will have equal rights with everyone.

9. Then if you nor I can afford health insurance & have cancer, we can both die miserable untreated deaths — we can do this together by Q&A. Then we will have the same special rights that homosexuals have. Sound good? I'll do it, if you will give up all your rights.

I have to wonder whether Sara is just screwing with us. In other questions she's answered, she defines herself as an agnostic; what possible reason would a non-religious person have for condemning homosexuality?

...also she seemed smarter in some of her previous posts. That last bit, about how a "genetic link" wouldn't obviate the immorality of homosexuality, seems kinda dumb -- as others have noticed.

I think that some activists feel that some form of proof that homosexuality could be genetic might cause people to accept it as a natural lifestyle.

If activists could prove that someone could be born a homosexual, then it would convince doubters, like yourself, who think that this is some perverse choice that they make, that it is a legitimate predisposition. By the way, the "behavior" is by-and-large accepted in today's society.
