They "clean" themselves with their spit and use the same "washcloth" that they've just licked their naughty bits with.
AND they lick their paws, paws that have just been burying poo in their sandbox of pee and poo. How is this being CLEAN?? Spreading poo and pee all over your coat.
How CLEAN can a kitchen counter be when the cat has just been in its sandbox of pee and poo and is now walking all over the counter, spreading hair, bacteria and litter on the counter where you are making a sandwich?

Did you know that in general, you have more bacteria and disgusting germs on your face and in your mouth than there are in cat feces??? In fact the saliva of dogs and cats is much cleaner than that of a humans and has many antibacterial and healing properties. If a human licks itself, yes they are only spreading more germs (probably worse than before) but a cat has far cleaner saliva that actually kills many bacteria and actually leaves a cleaner surface behind regardless of what has previously been in its mouth. If a human were to lick thier wonds you would get a horrible infection, but cats and dogs both actually help speed the healing of wounds by licking them as it kills more bacteria than it introduces.
Next time you think a cat or dog is "filthy" just remember kissing your fellow human on the cheek is far worse than even cat or dog feces.....
PS also a cats feet are infinitely cleaner than a humans feet because they clean them far more often and with antibacterial saliva.... How often do you clean your feet with antibacterial soap?? I can tell you a floor where people walk all the time is far dirtier than any surface a cat may walk upon. If you don't want cats on your counter, dont let them up there. Just remember a cats entire body is cleaner than every humans face!! Also I do let my cats on my counter and table but I clean it often and I am not unsanitary in the least... Who makes thier food on a bare counter top anyway? I always use a plate or cutting board which is always washed with bleach.

Very easy answer to your questions, YES cats are really clean. Since you don't have cats, let me tell you a little bit about them, cats have very rough tongues, they feel like sand paper, and it is made like that so when they groom themselves they can pick up all the dirt and the dandruff from their coats, their saliva contains a bacteria that kills all the bacteria they are swallowing when they clean themselves. Right after cats use the cat littler box the first thing they do is they clean themselves from head to toe! but since you have not had cats yet you don't really know that. If you ever had a chance to watch a cat doing that it is actually interesting because it is amazing on how long they take cleaning themselves. Once they have cleaned themselves the bacteria on their feet and fur has been destroyed. I bet you anything that there is more poop bacteria in your bathroom than in a cat's paw. Cat litter is also designed to kill the bacteria that causes the smell when a cat uses it and since they cover their own mess it is all virtually gone, some cat litters will completely kill all the bacteria in the poop and next time our precious cats use it it will be more clean than your own toilet.
I do not like dogs one bit, I believe that they are ugly nasty animals, but it is not their fault after all their ancestors are wolves and wolves are one of the stinkiest animals on earth according to animal planet "the most extreme" you can do a research on that, I am not lying, not to mention the fact that after they have used the potty YOU have to pick up their nasty UNCOVERED poop and they don't clean themselves at all. Anyway, i am not trying to compare cats and dogs because there is NO comparison, but I believe i have made my point.

I think cats are pretty clean because unlike dogs they dont go out and roll in sh**. They do clean themselves ALL THE TIME, but I do agree that a cat walking on a counter is a bad idea, we all know where their paws have been. You say your not a cat person.. give cats a chance. LOL

If you're worried about it, clean the cat. Our cat gets a bath with shampoo about once each week. But, almost daily he gets squirted down with bottles of warm water while he's in the tub. It's a great way to get rid of shedding hairs and whatever else he may be carrying around. He loves water, though. Loves it. He will sit in the sink with the sink running. He will wait, purring like mad in the tub, for one of us to pass by and squirt him with his bottles. He will wait for me to wipe him down with my wet hands after I wash them in the kitchen (making him wet and making me repeat the process).
You have to either come to terms with the fact that sharing your life with an animal is a little less hygienic than say... living in a laboratory, or not have a pet and avoid people with pets. It's no big deal to have a cat, really. And, I'm a total clean freak.

If you don't like cats, don't have one. They are just as clean as most other domesticated animals.
I don't allow my cats on the counters or tables, so I don't worry about that concern of yours.
The inside of your mouth has a lot more germs and bacteria than a cat's coat. Why don't you try disinfecting that?

Ok... You're calling dogs clean and cats dirty... that's why my house with two cats smells like fabric softener and cleanser and my inlaws place with three dogs smells like wet sh*t... Yeah... Ok, well I'll take you seriously for once. Cats have protective enzymes on their tongues that actually do work to kill bacteria. So yes, when they bathe themselves they really are bathing. That's why dogs are higher maintenance b/c you have to bathe them. Cats do it themselves. For the record, I like both cats and dogs. But, from personal experience, dogs are dirty, slobbery, and smelly. They are higher maintenance... sweet sometimes, but higher maintenance.
