Tonsils are glandular tissue located on both sides of the throat. The tonsils trap bacteria and viruses entering through the throat and produce antibodies to help fight infections.
(I always wonder the same thing and also the gallbladder, adenoids, etc....think it was just for the ice cream afterwards??)

I believe your tonsils are there to stop you swallowing germs - they're meant to catch them. If like me your tonsils were infected to the point they made you ill, then they whip them out. Much pain was endured throughout my 21st birthday i may add.......... Very very sore.

tonsils actually serve a purpose by preventing bacteria from traveling into deep into our throats preventing severe throat infections or lung infections.

hi i think they protect you throat from getting infected but sometimes as we all know they get infected as well, and we have more than a few cases of tonsilitus they take them out. i think they grow back though after a while.

they are the 1st line of defence against infections going to your chest ... they remove them when they get so badly swollen that you are unable to swallow any thing because they keep getting infected
