Every Sunday I go to the grocery store and purchase fresh herbs to cook with during the week. I put them in zip-lock bags, but they still don't stay fresh. Are there any tricks I can use to keep them fresh and green?

Hi Balner!

You need to wrap them in a wet paper towel in the plastic bag. It works great. I do all my Basil, Parsley and rosemary like this and they stay fresh forever!!!

Just wrap the herbs in paper towel and put the bundle in a zip lock baggie. They'll keep for at least a week in the fridge. Of course, basil being a delicate herb will not last quite as long as some of the others. Rosemary, thyme, parsley and oregano will last the longest. Basil will probably start to turn brown and lose it's lovely fragrance in a few days. Dill, cilantro/coriander and mint are somewhere inbetween.

Here is a way I tried when I had an extensive herb garden and it worked pretty well. Get several ice cube trays with the traditional ice cube separators or compartments. Into each cube section place a spring of your herb and freeze the herb sprigs in the cubes. When adding to your cooking you usually have to just plop in a cube or two to whatever you are cooking. Give it a try I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

i would try a pice of damp(not totally dripping wet) paper towel in with the herbs, and maybe not zip the bag shut, even tho they are cut herbs, they still put off a gas, and if they dont have regular air, then the gas rushes their "wilt"

Deep freeze them or get potted herbs & put them in a window facing west.

I usually have them on the counter in a glass jar with a bit of water, changing the water daily.

I grow my own, and I keep them in seal tight containers in the fridge, and yes, I also use the moist paper towel idea, if necessary!
