With children, you should always use a cool mist humidifier, NEVER a vaporizer, they burn or scold a child.
You can use them for children with stuffy noses, and/or a cough. I use my whenever it is dry in my home. As long as the filter is clean, you can use it all the time.

Vaporizer for a bad cold w/ stuffy nose. Humidifier all winter to prevent dry sinuses. Note: Humidifiers can be a bad source for mold unless kept constantly clean.

Humidifier is cool mist, helps when child has dry nose. Vaporizer is usually steam and is for stuffy nose.
