No, when you QUIT smoking you eat more, and many people then gain weight. No matter what you smoke, it will not make you gain - it is the need to eat enormous amounts of food when you STOP.

There is very thin evidence regarding the effect on weight smoking has. Ultimately, we can really only go on anecdotal evidence (i.e. real life stories and feedback).

Personally, I think smoking decreases the chance of you putting on weight. When I used to smoke, I would often pick up a cigarette at times when other people would pick up a snack. There is no doubt in my mind that it acted as an appetite suppressant. There is also a medical argument to suggest it increases the speed of metabolism.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that is an endorsement for smoking. It isn't. We all know the damage that smoking does to the body, the mind and the wallet, and that simply isn't a fair trade-off for the sake of a few pounds of fat. Especially considering that there are literally thousands of methods to get off fat.

A dodgy argument is also made that stopping smoking makes you put on weight. Well, I think that is true to a degree. If you stop smoking, you will inevitably look for new things to do with your fingers and your mouth. If you don't keep control of your eating, then you will consume more than you did before and naturally put on weight.

This is why you should be *very* conscious of your eating habits after stopping smoking. I don't think it is a medical issue -- I think it simply comes down to habits. If you can continue to eat an average amount of calories after quitting cigarettes, then there is no real good reason why you should put on a significant amount of weight. Indeed, if you use exercise as a cigarette substitute, then you may even get in better shape than you were before (I know I did).

In a scientific way - no, but quitting smoking can. There is a lot of support and even some OTC treatments available to help smokers quit without gaining significant amount of weight.

There is a remote possiblity that you smoke because you like to eat (i.e. smoking feels good after a meal), then I guess, it is possible...

I feel smoking suppreses my appetite. I don't smoke that much at all. A pack lasts me a week. But when I used to smoke a lot, I barely ate. Not to say its a way to diet, but its a good deterent when you're starving and can't eat at the moment.

When you quit, don't go to food as an alternative to smoking. It will only make you splurge!!!!

I don't know, I have had people tell me they smoke as an appetite suppressent which should have the opposite effect of losing weight, but I don't really know anything about having never smoked.

No, if anything it will make you lose weight because it speeds your heart rate and metabolism up. Plus, it curves hunger.
