It took me six months to read the Bible from cover to cover. I'm afraid I may have missed this nugget of knowledge somewhere along the way. The only mention of angels described them in really eye opening ways, nothing like the angels we have popularized. Did I miss the scripture, or is this a common misconception believed by society at large?

I love mature answers. Thank you. I already knew the answer to this one, but I wanted to see what others knew too.

I know it's often said that someone becomes an angel when they die and go to heaven, and perhaps this is what your aunt meant. However, this isn't exactly what the Bible teaches.

It says instead that after we enter heaven we become even greater than the angels. One reason is because God will give us (and not the angels) the authority to rule over His creation—something we can only barely imagine right now. The Bible says, "It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come" (Hebrews 2:5). It also says, "Do you not know that the saints will judge the world?" (1 Corinthians 6:2).

Can those who are now in heaven see what's happening on earth? The Bible isn't completely clear about this, although some Bible scholars suggest this may be the case. For example, after writing about past generations who are now in God's presence, the author of Hebrews says, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses ... let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us" (Hebrews 12:1).

Never lose sight of the fact that this world is not our final home, but we were created for eternity. Are you certain that you will go to be with God in heaven when you die? You can be, by giving your life to Jesus Christ.

I have never read anything about us getting wings upon entering Heaven. As for angels, a couple things you need to remember. First, the common perception of angels comes from medieval European art, not the Bible. As such the artists of that time painted what they thought angels would look like and tried to express their beauty, power, and awe-inspiring nature. Second, when you try to explain the spiritual in terms of the physical, you need to rely heavily on metaphor. I think the idea of wings comes from various places in the Bible where the Hebrew word "Kanaph" is used to express the majesty of actual flight (Ex 37:9) or safety (De 32:11) or as an expression of vast power (2Ch 3:11). Finally, remember that when we die, we do not become angels. Angels are separate created beings. We are actually higher in the order of things than angels (Heb 1:5).

God didn't create humans to have wings and when we die, we will not have wings. The Bible does not support any ideas of humans having wings. The Bible does support the ideas of different types of angels. There are warring angels, singing angels, ministering angels, angels playing instruments, and angels delivering messages for God. I believe that since God has created different types of angels, there are also different appearances of angels. Angels with wings and angels without wings. Angels that are of different race. We serve a God that has quite the imagination and I would not want to put God in a box as far as his creation ability is concerned. However, hollywood has ruined the image of what an angel should be in morals and in appearance. Don't ever take counsel for godly views from Hollywood, half of the time the producers behind the movies are just as messed up as anyone else in the world. The Bible says don't seek the counsel/advice from the ungodly people if you want to know things of God. Ask someone who knows God personally about Biblical things.

NO
The idea of people becoming angels with wings is a traditionalized notion based upon a false precept. The fact that people can become angels to the living God after mortal death is correct but the idea of wings is not part of the concept. Poets have said that we move or fly as if on angel wings. Angels have the power to transport through the air, thus "flying" and perhaps to satisfy our feeble minds we attached wings to them. Spiritual transport does not require wings. When Christ went up into heaven, he did not use wings. When Elijah went up into heaven, he did not use wings.
So, in short, you did not miss any mention of them when you read the Bible. It is not there.

There are levels of angels. Cheribum have wings. God also instructed these to be on the ark... We will not have wings b/c we were not created as angels. Only angels are angels. When someone dies and others say, "They're an angel in Heaven." It's not true. You are just YOU in Heaven...not an angel.

Instruction from God about ark -
Exodus 25:20 - "The cherubim are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover."

No, angels are not these baby looking creatures that artists create. They are mighty warriors and servants of God. The Archangel(s) - Michael (& some argue Gabriel) is a mighty warrior with no wings..

The Bible also tells us to be mindful of our actions because we might be in the company of angels and not even know it. It think we'd know it if they were donned with wings...ha! Cool though, huh?

Good question!

Not that I am aware of. I think the angels with wings are just an artists conception. I have never read anywhere in the bible that we will get wings.

Angels are usually depicted as having wings, because there is a verse in the bible that describes an angel who had six wings, two to cover his feet, two his face, and with two he flew (Isaiah 6:2).

We don't ever get wings, we are not angels and humans do not become angels when they die.

I've read the Bible as well and don't recall anything about angels having wings. I think it may just be a popular "Hollywoodized" thing.

We do not become angels when we get to heaven. We are above the angels. We will not fly but will move with the speed of thought. We also will help judge the angels that followed Lucifer.
