With war imminent, the military is racing to equip tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and humvees with thermal "combat identification panels." The 24-by-30-inch panels give off a bright signature when viewed through infrared night-vision sights. Officials hope the panels will be more effective than the identifier used by troops in the Gulf War: an inverted V painted on armored vehicles with thermal paint and decals. "This is a low-tech solution," says an Army official. "But it's a heck of a lot better than what we had during Desert Storm."
