I would think that supplies should definitely come first, but it is always a confidence & self-esteem booster to have something new to wear to school also on your first day.

I think both are important. New school year, new start new clothes new supplies. Now I don't think they have to be "new" in the sense of regular retail on anything. Second hand stores have great clean clothes. The clothes will be "new" to the children. And school supplies are soooo cheap at the beginning of school it is a steal. Stock up on supplies. Crayolas are .10 to .25 cents right now, in January they are back up to 1.75 or more. Buy enough so you won't spend the extra money when they run out or get lost..

It depends on the financial situation. Of course, school supplies are the most important. Here, the school supply list is in the stores a month ahead of school starting. You're expected to show up with those basic supplies and not much is provided by the school. If you can afford both, don't go crazy with clothes, they outgrow them anyways. A couple pairs of pants/shorts with 2 tops each for a boy gives good rotation. For girls, skirt/shorts to alternate tops and maybe a couple dresses. The warm months don't last long when school starts anyways and then you have to buy the winter clothes. Most people that answer clothes as a priority are kids who think they have to go in looking like their whole summer was spent at a spa. Fact is, nobody really remember what you wore last Spring or if you got it over the summer. New clothes on the first day of school is nothing more than a fashion statement or to say my kid looks better than yours. I have a daughter that, thankfully isn't all about fashion. She can't stand the tops with all these sayings and stuff on them and hates jeans that sit on her hips. She usually starts school in a new outfit, but it wasn't bought for the first day. I buy clothes on clearance ahead of time and as she grows into them, they work into her wardrobe. This year, she's in private school and wears a uniform. She just loves it. She says it's never been so easy to get ready for school. There's a good variety of uniforms available, but she never has to worry about color or matching.

School supplies, then the clothes.

The new school year comes with a change of season so it has become the norm to buy new school clothes much for that reason. Usually I buy my daughter a few pair of jeans and some tops. One nice skirt and new sneakers and shoes. Then I get more as the weather gets colder.
School supplies are not as necessary as the stores want you to think. For the first day of school they need a notebook, pen or pencil, and an eraser. The teachers will tell them what additional supplies they will need to buy because some things may already be provided by the school. I looked at one of those lists that Staples has for school supplies - yeah, they love it when people take that seriously.

Both are important!

Supplies should come first, but honestly, would you send your kids to school wearing clothes that are too small? In case you haven't noticed, kids grow, so they need new clothes every now and then. It's not like they need an entirely new wardrobe, but you should get some new stuff to replace what doesn't fit any more.

I'm a teenager and I get 100 dollars for clothes and 50 for supplies, to budget however I want. So I spent the clothing money on some new shirts, new pants, new shoes, and new underwear. Clothing is a neccesity for kids!

If its a toss-up, then supplies first, but please try to afford 1 new outfit for the first day. For me, their school lists change enough every year that even if I used some things left over from last year, I'd still end up buying alot. My kids have grown so much that shoes are a must. With my son, he has to have new jeans because he's growing out of the old ones and has blown the knees out of them. Shirts too short, backpacks that tore apart by the time school ended, busted shoe laces, another round of underwear or socks to fit their growing bodies. Mine are in the years where they grow alot each year, so its a must. If your kids are teens, it might not be as needed. The selection is limited and its already getting cold where I live, so if I don't get things when I can, it will be that much harder once winter hits. I do only allow my kids to get 1 short sleeved shirt, though. 1 pair of sneakers. 5-6 pairs of jeans. And at least 6 new long sleeved shirts. The rest I can add or replace as I see its needed. I just don't want them going to school in clothes that are too short for their body.

Supplies are more important. There is no need to buy new clothes for the beginning of school, it is still warm enough for their summer clothes. Then buy them some new outfits when the weather changes. Their is not need to waste money on things you don't need.

If you can not afford to do both then school supplies are most important. There are often places that will help families that can not afford to do both with school supplies so the child can start school with new clothes that fit properly and give them a sense of pride. If this is the case, check with your local churches or salvation army. Very often they also have back packs and hair cut vouchers as well as school supplies and coats and shoes.

I start school clothes shopping in May, that way by the school starts they have a bunch of new clothes, and it didnt all come out of pocket at once. New school clothes help with self esteem, and it makes them excited about starting the year off. School supplies are important.
