I'm traveling budget and want to stay around central Bangkok. I'm currently concidering spending more money on a hotel near the airport and the next morning busing it into the guest house districts. If its not too much of a hassle to get a taxi and find a room then I would have no problem getting a cheaper room within the center city.

There's really nothing around Don Muang airport. You would still have to take a taxi. Washington hotel is not expensive and not far. The hotel restaurant ripped me off so I hate to recommend them. If you will be flying into the new airport, I have no idea.

The Sawasdee hotels around Khao San Road are dumps but at ~5-700B with A/C they OK for budget travelers. I've stayed at several. Reservations are not required, especially if you're traveling September-October. The A2 airport bus drops you off by the Sawasdee Khaosan. If they are full they will walk you to another nearby Sawasdee hotel.

If you are traveling alone with light luggage then take the A2 airport bus (100B) to Khao San Road. Web link below. If there 2 or more people or if you have a lot of luggage then take a taxi. Avoid the limos (600B+). Even if the taxi line is long it moves fast. Taxi to KSR is about 250B. You can pay 70B more to take the toll road. Even at 1AM Bangkok traffic is still bad enough that this is probably worth it.

Enjoy your visit to Thailand.

Take a taxi to Malaysia Hotel. It's safe, clean, great location and only about $12-14 US dollars a night. It has a 24 hour coffee shop, pool, 24 hour front desk. It's the best deal going. When you get aclimated you can walk most places and to the underground transportation system and to the sky way system. From there Bangkok is wide open to you. I've landed after midnight numerous times and getting a taxi and getting checked in late is not a problem....Don't waste time or money at an airport hotel. The way it is you'd still have to take a taxi to an airport hotel anyway. To the Malaysia is only about 20 min. and I think about $12.00 fare. Better yet, I have a Thai friend who loves to meet people. He can meet you at the airport--deal with the taxi, get a better rate, get you to the hotel and checked in as he knows the hotel and his way around. The $10. or so you give him wil save you alot of hassle and after a long flight and being in a new place that would make it much easier. He also loves to guide people around and show them the sights day and/or nights. He knows where "everything" you may want to see and do is and how it works. He is a very nice young man, speaks fairly good english and is 100% honest and trustworthy. A read jewel that I found on my first trip to Thailand and we remain friends. He can use the few dollars and you will be making a good Thai friend. Let me know if you want his email address. Thailand is a wonderful, great, exciting and fun fun fun place to visit. You will go back again and again.

Most "traveling budget" tourist would take a taxi and go find a room on Khao san Road. I heard that there were plenty and booking was not necessary, though quality could be doubtful. Never been there myself though. Actually there are many hotels within the center city and some places are inexpensive and yet good. For example, White Orchid Hotel in Chinatown (You can google it) or an even economic one: Avana in Bang Na area (tel: 027444280).

I live in Bangkok.

Sleep on the plane, take you're time getting out of the airport, catch a cab (if you don't mind spending higher night rates(though remember you can negociate the price)), or better yet find a bus and head to Koh San Road. Start you're trip off right and pull an all nighter and find a hotel/hostel the next morning around 10am.

not sure when your coming, the new airport opens for business on 28 Sep so what everyone has told you is correct if you land before the 28th. Just outside the airport your see a line of people waiting for a taxi, it moves fast so don't worry. But as for a place to stay you should have planned that. Lots of sites to book, I liked sawadee.com I used it before.

Hotels close to airport are expensive , getting a taxi any time of day is no problem they queue up outside , just make sure they put the meter on ! would be a good idea to know a hotel so you can tell them to take you there
