I must insist that you realize there is no such thing as a "free" kitten. Kittens need worming, shots to prevent distemper, spaying/neutering, testing for Flv and FIV, etc.

What you pay at a shelter for an adoption is generally half of what these kitten needs will cost you on the "open" market. And all these things have been taken care of for you.

Kittens are not "child friendly". They have baby habits such as biting or having their claws out that have to do with their immaturity. The best choice for a home with children is a cat that is around 1-5 years old.

Check with a local animal shelter. I got a 5 week old kitten that was just a few days from being put to sleep. She,s been a great little pet and the shelter had provided some of her shots.

Check the classified section in your local newspaper. Most of the time there will be ads for kittens free to good home.

If there's nothing there, start calling around to local vet offices. A lot of times their clients will let them know if they have an animal they are trying to get rid of, and A LOT of the time it's kittens.

Try petfinders.com -- they have abandoned kittens and cats for adoption. There is usually a photograph and description of the animal. Kittens generally don't start off being child-friendly; they have to be socialized because they generally dislike the loud noises and sudden movements that children are prone to.

I would talk to a local animal shelter or vet's office. Sometimes animals, especially kittens, are dropped and abandoned at these places and need homes. Plus, you'll know that these are healthy kittens--the staff will check them and make sure they receive all proper vaccinations and/or treatments.

Check the paper for an ad, but I would recommend going through a shelter. They will charge a fee, but often they provide neutering and vaccinations. This is a really great deal. Every animal needs these vital things and they will not come as cheap by doing it all yourself through the vet.

Any run-of-the-mill animal shelter.
