Maybe he doesn't like the bowl.. what if you take some of it out and lay it next to the bowl.. will it still dig at it?

Cats like to dig, chase, jump, bite, and barf. :)

By the way, it's spelled "Excessively".

He's doing it to cover up the scent.
Just like they do in the litter boxes.

In the wild, cats will ALWAYS cover their meals, and excriment so that predators will not be able to catch the scent.

LOL......feel lucky he just digs! My cat will actually bring stuff (mainly my clothes) over to the dish and cover his food up.

Nothing like coming home to see a pile of clothes where his food dish is.

It is from back in the old days. Cats would hunt their food, they would bury it and come back to it to eat. It's a natural thing for them to do. Our cat's food is on this little rug and he'll "dig" on the rug until it covers the bowl.

Some of my cats does that but only after eatin as if to cover it up from another eating his food. It does not do any harm so treat it a cute lil habit.

Lol, I had a cat that would drop a piece of chow in his water every day, he was very obviously doing it intentionally too we watched him as he did it. We think he figured out that his water got changed when he did that.

My Leo does that when his food and water dishes are empty. He learned it from my cat Bobby who sadly passed away last month.

he should be checked by a vet because if this behavior goes on much longer he will end up acting more like a dog than a cat
