Well, first of all, congratulations. You cannot learn to be a sheriff in one day. It takes between 470-640 hours of training (depends on the state). The county should foot the bill for your training.
Generally, departments like this tend to run themselves. Your dispatchers, deputies and administrators know their jobs and you should be prepared to trust them. The only thing you REALLY need to know up front is how to be a good manager, a good motivator and present a decent public image. Practice these words: 'We are investigating that, so I have no comment at this time."
In a small county - providing you are not cursed with methamphetamine - I would hope most of your problems would be of the barking dog-rowdy teenager variety. But if things get stickier, you will need to be more diplomatic. The National Sheriff's Association has a number of conventions, seminars and training resources that can help you out.
I would LOVE to talk to you, because I am working on a book (fiction) and the main character gets elected sheriff of a small county just like you did. E-mail me at shomechely@yahoo.com.
Good luck!

i hit upon it unusual that someone who claims to be a deputy sheriff is so undesirable with spelling and grammar and would not even comprehend a thanks to spell 'deputy'. also that a member of the sheriff's branch has no theory what his responsibilities will encompass and what geographical section he will be policing. a lot so as that he comes to a call to ask strangers on the cyber web for the solutions rather of his preparation officer or others on the dep.. the reply? A police wanna-be residing out his fantasies through pretending to be linked with or a member of a police branch. no longer something incorrect with having targets, my pal, yet play it cool. i became also curious what the quoted situations ought to do with something in any respect. ???

anyone can be a Sheriff. We have had the same one for the last 25 years and he hasn't a clue. A good manager surrounds himself with his own political cronies. The first think you have to do is to find cronies that carry out your wishes. Reassign those who were loyal to the last Sheriff as they are not going to help you (they will definitely hinder you).

No....you need to go to a police academy to learn about law enforcement. That will take about 8 to 12 weeks. Good luck Sheriff!!

Oh how I wish it were true. So, just in case it is, try this. Arrest the Mayor or some other high official. Charge him with an old unsolved murder. Have an unofficial trial with yourself as Judge. Find him guilty then order him to be hanged in three days time. Then, and only then, allow him to make a phone call. Sit back and wait for the sh*it to hit the fan.
What a beautiful thought though....................

well, hey, at least you know
1) you're popular :)
2) you got a job lined up
3) you can lay down the law on whoever you want >:)
4) you don't have to worry about getting arrested any time soon.
So if you think about it, you could really use this job in your favor. I'd go for mayor next. lol

That is seriously one of the funniest things I've read here.
Go online, see if there is some course you can take.
Hopefully you won';t have to fire anything gun, send the deputies to do the dirty work.
