You will find that the typical well-bred Miniature Schnauzer is relatively small in size but in no way toyish or delicate. When you pick him up you will discover he is sturdy, heavy, and muscular... a ruggedness combined with the elegance and beauty of a pure-bred. He makes an excellent companion because he is extremely obedient and quick to learn, is devoted, playful and affectionate. His alertness makes him an excellent guard dog. He is spunky and fearless but not aggressive so that he can run with other dogs. And, like other terriers, he will go to ground to attack vermin of all kinds. One must become aware of these characteristics lest he be lost, stolen, or a victim of an accident. In the suburbs he should be fenced in or walked on a leash.
He is as much at home in the city with a small amount of exercise as he is in the country where he appears tireless. And, he easily adapts to any change of condition or climate. His deepest need, however, is to live as a part of the family, going where they go, doing what they do. Sleeping on the bed, or in his own, beside his owner is his great joy. The Miniature Schnauzer does not shed, so he often can be enjoyed by persons who are allergic to other breeds of dogs. In return, the owner must keep him groomed to maintain his appearance.
Very perky and bright-eyed. Loving and intelligent. Energetic, affectionate, and obedient. Playful, happy and alert, they like children. The Miniature Schnauzer demands time and companionship from its owner. It can be feisty and fairly dog-aggressive - putting on a show of superiority without necessarily intending to fight. This can be fairly dangerous for the Miniature Schnauzer, who will challenge even large dogs, sometimes bringing more trouble on himself than he really wanted. Socialize this breed well with other dogs when it is still a puppy. If properly introduced, the Miniature Schnauzer will get along with another dog, but will not accept every dog that comes its way. Since the temperament of this breed can be quite variable, select a puppy from parents whose temperament you enjoy. They make good companions and family pets. Schnauzers tend to bark a lot, but it does not have a yappy bark and is not as annoying as one may think. Most of the time the dog's bark sounds like it is talking to you in a low carried-out voice. They make good guard dogs and mouse catchers. They are excellent watchdogs and are great to travel with. Some can be reserved with strangers, but most love everyone.

A Miniature Schnauzer is 12"-14" on the shoulder. The toy Schnauzer isn't recognized as a breed through the yank Kennel club, even with the very undeniable actuality that some breeders attempt to furnish Miniature Schnauzers that are lower than 10 inches, and they call them "Toy Schnauzers". known (17"-20") and sizable (23"-28") Schnauzers are also recognized through the AKC.

So glad you asked. I have raised Miniature Schnauzers and still have two. They are wonderful with children. Good at guarding the house when you are gone. Very loving with the family and our friends. They tend to gravitate to one person in the family but are equally loving with everyone. They are social butterflies. They do not shed which is a big plus. No extra cleaning because of them. They stay clean a long time with very little grooming (depending of course on the condition of your yard). I groom mine myself which is very easy. Get a pet grooming video and Wahl clippers. It will save you a lot of money over the years. Some are real barkers but in a way that is good. Ours don't bark for some reason and I wish they did when strangers come to the gate. They have few health problems but prone to bladder stones so search for a diet that will help in this area. Your vet can help guide you. We have a street dog (she lived on the streets and followed me home one day) and she guards the outside and keeps all her shedding out there too.

it is not about the dog being easy to train...it is the people that need to be trained.
M Schnauzers are very smart. Training need consistancy. It you can do that, you can train any dog. I had a M schnauzer growing up. He was wonderful and very smart.
Love, exercise, discipline and rules will make a happy dog.

YES they are awesome dogs. Smart, but not easily bored. Great with kids and other dogs **if properly socialized**. They really are great little dogs, they were one of the four breeds I narrowed down to after 10 years of deciding what kind of dog I wanted! :) Good luck.
