I am a college student and I find myself not sleeping, and constantly worrying about things I have to do in October! I have to do a little presentation and I have to get up on stage and perform with my band. I'm not use to doing these kinds of things. Yesterday school started and I was so nervous in every class when I had to introduce myself. What the heck is wrong with me? I'm having heart palpitations from this, seriously. I need some kind of way to obsess over something different and make all of the nervousness go away. I could end up having a heart attack by the time I have to do these things that are making me anxious. What should I do!?

My advice to you comes in form of a question: How do you feel when you watch somebody talk/perform in front of other people?

The answer is that you don't expect anything special. You are relaxed and just listen to the person. When you realize that the people in front of you are relaxed and don't expect anything out of the ordinary, you'll be relaxed too.

I once heard of a poll that said the majority of people were more afraid of public speaking than death. I would believe it. I would assume that you've never done much public speaking... because it makes you so nervous. I would learn some relaxing technuiques. I personally sit down, relax all the muscles in my body, close my eyes, concentrate on my breathing, and listen to my heartbeat. This is a good strategy for calming down. Before you give your presentation, make sure you practice and know your material well. This will cut down on the stress of the presentation itself. Practice in front of a supportive group, like family or close friends. You will never succeed in getting all of the nervousness to go away... no one does. Just takes some deep breaths, and go with the flow. I hope you do well!

The drs have me on 40 mg of Inderol to regulate my heartbeat. It also happens to be what the performers use to stop stage fright. I still don't know how it prevents that, but I used to be afraid to speak in front of a crowd until I got on that stuff. Now I couldn't care less. I could go onstage in front of a million people and it would not faze me. But it sounds like maybe if your heart IS beating fast like that this is what you should be on. Ask the dr about it.

Prepare your thoughts and practice, even if it's by yourself to a digital camera.
Pauses can be good. You can make a pause that might otherwise look uncomfortable make you look poised.
Keep things short and simple. Most audiences are pleased when someone speaks for a shorter amount of time and doesn't get too tangentrial.
Yes, you can even prepare for a very short "speech" like introducing yourself.

Homer742's advise is good. Also . . .

Most people tell themselves they're nervous and scared and this takes energy away from them.
Tell yourself that you are EXITED! The feeling is identical and being exited gives you energy!

Just try it!

You could detach yourself until it becomes no concern.
