The DC in Washington DC stands for District of Columbia.

There are two Washingtons in the US.

You have "The State Of Washington"

And you have "Washington DC"

Washington DC Means "Washington, Disrtict of Columbia" i.e. Washington in the Federal State of the District of Columbia, hence Washington DC.
