Usually in Word, when you highlight something, then start typing, it just replaces what I've highlighted, but somehow I must have changed a setting somewhere because now when I try this, the highlighted text stays, and is not replaced. This is tough to describe, so I appreciate any suggestions as to how to change it back!

Tools\Options\Edit tab 'check 'typing replaces text'

I'm specifically talking about version 2003. In previous versions, I believe it is still udner the edit tab but says 'replace text as you type'

You must be talking about the "AutoCorrect" feature. Make sure all checkmarks are present in windows that appears when you select the "AutoCorrect" item of the "Tools" menu.

Oh! Just read the question again. That's not it.
Put a checkmark next to "Typing replaces selection" in the "Options" item of the "Tools" menu :)
