It can vary and go up and down still! I've known of some that go back to normal for a day, and then start over again.

Let her nest and shred paper or dig around in her whelping box. The exercise will help move the puppies up higher and into the right positions. Catch naps when you can. :)

Elevated? 99 is a depressed temp ;-) Dogs are usually around 101-102... the temperature drop usually means whelping will begin within the next 24 hours so start getting ready and let your vet know so he can either give you a contact number or help you personally if there is any problems during off-hours. If for whatever reason you don't have a vet you should have the number for an animal hospital ready just in case. A lot of times they will help you over the phone at no charge.

I know what you're going through. You're so anxious to see the puppies, you've been waiting for weeks. Please don't irritate a dog who is about to give birth by checking her temp a lot. She'll have them when she's ready. I know it's terrible that she can't have them when you're ready, lol. It's been several years since I've had a dog who had pups, the only sign I can remember to look for is that they will start lookin for a place to have them. She'll find a spot where she thinks she won't be bothered. After that it should be any day.

Actually, what you want to see is a hard drop down to about 98.2* - 98.4*. When you see that, she should deliver within 24 hours (usually 12).

She will go into labor when the puppies are ready to come.
