Hang a whistle around your neck for emergencies/attacks
Hold a can of pepper spray while walking alone.........not keep it in your bag, it would be hard to find it if someone surprise you with an attack.
If you can hold a stun gun.......hide it under your coat or scarf or something. But make sure it's in your hand.
When in a cab, immediately make a text message to a friend/family and tell them the number of the cab you are in and the company of the cab, so that if you don't get home in time they will know you are in danger. Keep contacts with family/friends throughout the cab journey. If possible give them the name of the cab driver .........some cabs have the cab driver's name and cab registration number posted for the passengers' info. Maybe it is preferable to make a call instead of text message so that the driver will know you have someone keeping track of you.
Again keep the pepper spray on hand to attack the driver if he tries to harm you.
Lastly, take up martial arts or some self-defence course.

Martial arts is good, a taser, knife, or even a gun these days. Anything is better than nothing. You are right, it's not safe anymore. The best thing to do is don't walk alone as much as possible. I've known some crazy people, and it's a real trip what goes on in their heads. Watch out for people who seem to intoxicated, and not just on alcohol. Carry a cell phone too. aight, peace.

There's only so much a girl can do these days. The best advice I can give is to go to your local police station or community college and ask if they have information on self-defense classes. Many of these classes are geared specifically to women. My college offers one taught by our campus police; one for everyone and one only for the ladies. It's very informative and helpful. It will be a huge confidence builder, which is the main component of not feeling paranoid or insecure. Also, if you will be out of the house for a while, you can always call a reliable friend before you leave and have them call you in a few hours just to make sure everthing is kosher. This works great for parties/dates!

The martial arts self defense stuff I took was not helpful to me, if I got attacked I don't feel I could recall what I was shown. When I carry pepper spray in specific situations it is appropriate to protect myself. Other than that I just stay aware of what is going on around me (who's loitering or in my path ahead),if you must, take a route around them; and in certain situations I don't have a purse that can be grabbed by anyone. Ignore anyone saying dirty words to you. It is good to be on your guard, even in the daytime now a days.

TRY and maintain a pose of "I'm alert and watching but not paranoid", because if you look really spooked (especially in a bad area), it may send out signals of "easy target". (Yes, I know, easier said than done.)
FWIW, I live near the DC area, and a large percentage of the violent crimes seem to be avoidable by a certain amount of judicious common sense. DON'T hang around bad areas, drunk on your behind; don't make ugly comments to other people; don't flash large amounts of money....
Dress casually, wear low heels. Nothing you're carrying or wearing is worth your life, IMO.
Contact your local police department and see if they're offering any talks on protection for women.

If you're that concerned, you should do two things:
1) Take a self-defense or martial arts class so you can protect yourself if something should happen.
2) See a psychiatrist as you may want to discuss your fear with someone.

The first advice is good, but you also need to drop the negative thinking. If you think bad things, you'll attract them and they'll happen to you. So stop thinking that way, replace those thoghts with something good, like you're gonna meet someone really interesting...IDK, something different and positive.
