No. We spend 12-16 of the first years of our lives sitting in a classroom, preparing to take tests...but in real life there are no tests. They tell you all that crap about how they are helping to prepare you for the real world. I don't think there has ever been a person that graduated from college or high school "ready" for the real world. Almost anyone will tell you that within the first couple years of their job they used 10% of what they learned in school and the other 90 they learned by working. So if we are all being prepared to work, why do we spend so much time in a system that is different from real life??? I think apprenticeship and skills training needs to be a part of the system. Before going to college everyone should have to work, preferably a labor job. Then every single person that goes to college realizes its not all peaches and cream, and will help them realize what they have. I have more to say...just not now...

Wow, you picked my soapbox!
I have personal experience with all I'm about to write.
Schools are horrible when it comes to special education. They fight parents and spend thousands of dollars to take them to court to get out of helping the children who need it most. And we as taxpayers pay these people to do this job and they don't do it. In our case, school was very devious, tricky and lying about both my kids. It was horrible.
When this 'no child left behind act' was started by the federal gov't, this in itself is a violation of federal law. They made a law that says it's ok to violate the law. The reason for this is federal law states that each state is suppose to handle education, and not at the federal level.
Anyway, when this crap started, ALL they teach in schools now is what is going to be on the NCLB tests. They don't teach anything else needed by children. NCLB is a law that makes schools give students a test every year to show that the SCHOOL is doing well, and NOT the students. This testing has no effect on the students whatsover, but schools really push this on the children all year long. Lots of kids get very stressed about passing this test and most times teachers do NOT tell them they will NOT get a grade for it!
Other things are, schools teach only in ONE way, sitting at the books. And some kids don't learn well this way. THey have a different learning style. (like my child) So, if a child can't learn in this way, or has learning problems, the school ignores this and just says the child is lazy, don't care, etc.
Which child in the 1st grade would really be lazy? They are eager to learn! But the reason schools put the lazy label on the child is because they don't want the parent to know the child really has learning problems, becuase the school does not want to help with the learning problems.
Public schools are VERY CORRUPT !!!

My school system's fine, except for the strikes. The teachers are already on strike and the food service workers and the custodians might join them. You would have heard about it if you live in Chicago. I actually feel sorry for the school board, although they spent thousands of dollars sending people to Japan a few years ago. As for the quality of education, I like it. People say that the regular and special education students don't have it as good as we Honors program students. I cannot say if that's true because I've never been in regular classes.

Not really. A lot of classes are unorganized and it is very hard to discipline students. Plus a lot of money that is supposed to go towards education, isn't going where it needs to go. Therefore, teachers are not wanting to work because there is no money involved.
It's all about stupid politics.
