Call the finance company and tell them if they EVER send you a threatening letter like that again you will sue them for violation of the Fair Debt Collection Act. Tell them in no uncertain terms that you are aware of your delinquency and you want all letters and phone calls (other than your monthly bill) stopped IMMEDIATELY. If they pull that crap again, sue them.

You will have to read the documents that you signed to see if there is a clause that states they can call the total debt due (by any means) if you do not hold up your end of the agreement.

If no clause, speak to a lawyer about the intent to sue letter.

Yes lepninja, it "IS" illegal to send an intent to sue IF the sender has no intention of suing !!!!!

I don't think it is ever illegal to send a letter of intent to sue. It may feel like a threat but fair use of the legal system doesn't qualify as a threat. If the lawsuit is frivolous it will be thrown out.
