Contrary to what you have heard here prior to now, Snipe do exist and are hunted by sportsmen in their native habitat. A Snipe is a small (3-4 oz.) bird that lives in freshwater marshes and swamps. It has a long slightly curved bill it uses to probe for food in the mud. They are mainly brown with some darker specks and broken bar markings. Check out www.whatbird.com for additional info on the bird itself. As for hunting them, it is a tough hunt as I can personally attest. Their habitat is extremely difficult to negotiate, with thick brushy cover, lots of trees, and usually water to walk through. Tall rubber boots are a must. A good dog is also important, as the birds will allow you to walk past them without flushing if you don't have a dog. The closeness of the cover makes a light, quick-swinging shotgun a major plus. Light loads of 7-1/2 or 8 shot will do the job if you can hit these birds. They are very agile and quick flyers and dodge trees and brush a lot as they never get very far up off the ground.

I've never hunted them (not a hunter, don't know if you even *can* hunt them!!), but the link below will take you to a site where you can see what they look like and information about them. We have them here in Delaware and I have seen them. They are very secretive birds and stick to marshy areas where it is almost impossible to get to, which is why, I think, the proverbial prank of a "snipe hunt" was pulled on people. You'd get them drunk and send them out with a flashlight and a bag and let them get lost in the woods, where snipe never go, and try to catch one. Never did get the humor of that. But they *do* exist, contrary to what you may hear on shows like Andy Griffith!! Or, apparently, from posters like Soleil Noir!!!

Snipe hunting is when you take people out and tell them are hunting a snipe and dump them off and leave because they are gullable.
But there really is a snipe and it is a type of bird.

I have never been, but it is a type of small bird. You may notice "Snipe" is rather similar to "sniper". That's because the skill required to hit a snipe with any kind of firearm is quite advanced, so someone with the skill to hit them was often referred to as a sniper.
This transfered to the military to designate a skilled marksman/camoflauge expert and there ya go: sniper.
Yeah, people use that to fool others, but they're real.

Was a popular bonding activity for Walker and Trevette on "Walker Texas Ranger." Trevette was always "sniped" week in and week out. At least both the character and the actor took the joke in good stride.

"Snipe hunting" is also known as a "wild goose chase" -- like sending someone to the store to pick up "elbow grease" and "headlight fluid"....
Whoever talked to you about going snipe hunting was pulling your chain...
