They arent as cut and dried as they seem.
Mechanical doesnt mean only working with solid objects, or machines. Electrical doesnt mean only working with analog electrical circuits.

An engineer is a tool designer. They make things that make and do things.
A mechanical engineer typically works with machines, but that can be turbomachines, robotics, or just mechanical systems.
An industrial engineer works with machines that produce, and systems that produce, in order to make reliable, high-performance production of a product or service.
An electrical engineer works with machines that do things with electricity, and that can range from the generator in a powerplant, to a computer chip, to an antenna in a satellite.
A computer engineer works with computers, and everything they connect to.
A bioengineer works with things that work with biological entities, so they work on prosthetics, or sports gear, or artificial hearts.
A petroleum engineer works with extracting oil, as mining engineers work with extracting minerals.
A chemical engineer works with chemical reactions, typically optimizing processes.
A materials engineer works to develop materials to do tasks better, more reliably and cheaper than current market, or to optimally match materials to applications.

Its easy to see the overlap between the mechanical engineer working the turbine, or the mechanical structure of a generator, and the electrical engineer who works with the electrical performance which in turn is dictated by the mechanical performance of the same generator. Its easy to see how mechanical, industrial, electrical, and biomedical engineers can all work on artificial hearts.

All kinds of engineers use computer models, and computer assisted machining to make their parts better. At some colleges the curricula for computational engineering and applied computational mathematics is identical. Electrical, mechanical and industrial engineers all work together when desgining tools for the semiconductor industry.

If you are trying to figure out what kind of engineer to be, dont do it based on the label. Get a catalog for the college, circle every class you have longed to take, that has content that you could see yourself doing for the rest of your life in a career, then look for the major that has the most of those.

I say it all the time: the people who make the most difference in the world are the people who do what they love, and love what they do. Get into a field where you can do what you love and love what you do, and you are more likely to work harder, last longer in classes, get better grades, and change the world for the better when you work in that field.

I've been in this business for 6 years as a Mechanical Engineer. Here are the major categories of engineers:

Mechanical Engineer- works with pumps, fans, HVAC, pressure vessels, materials, and machined objects

Electrical/Control Systems Engineer- works with anything that requires power and controls

Structural/Civil Engineer- works with buildings, bridges, roadways, underground sewers, and structures

Process/Chemical Engineer- works with chemical reactions, liquids, gases, and vapors

Environmental Engineer- same as a Chemical Engr but in relation to any impact on the environment.

Let me know if you need additional info.

well, there r different facultys of engineering.It is a course of 6 years(diploma 3 yrsand degree 3 yrs) after 10th & of 4 years after 12th(degree).
1. E&tc engineering:- electronics and tele-communication engineering. It is the most topmost branch of all the faculties. It is related with electronic equipments such as t.v., vcd,radio,dvd,etc..
electronics engg and electronics and communication are its sub group branches.
2.computer engg:-related to computer.
3. information technology(i.t.):- again related to computer where software is taught in deep.
4. instrumentation engg
5. electrical engg:- about electrical appliances.
6.polymer
7.petrochemical engg
8.chemical engg.
