It's a martini; gin (or vodka, or even a mix of both) plus dry vermouth.

It's a vodka martini, probably "very dry", i.e. only a trace of vermouth. I'd pour a little dry vermouth in a shaker, swirl it around and throw it out. Then pour in 2 jiggers of vodka (plain vodka, not flavored) and add ice (cubes, not crushed). Shake it (a horizontal motion looks classier than vertical.) Strain into traditional martini glass. OK, but not required, to throw some ice into the glass at the start to prechill it, but throw that ice away before pouring. The reason for stirring gin martinis is "it bruises the gin" which is of course nonsense, really the reason is shaking results in a colder drink that stirring, and since gin actually has taste from volatiles, having it too cold would reduce the taste. Since vodka basically has no taste, getting it colder is OK. Some people even keep the vodka in the freezer. I don't remember what garnish Bond preferred, but I like a twist of lemon rather than a olive or onion for vodka martinis. Oh, for the complete Bond experience you should probably wear a white dinner jacket.

James Bond's favorite cocktail is a dry martini. A traditional martini is chilled dry gin (or vodka) poured in a shaker with a dash of dry vermouth. It is shaken with ice and poured in a martini glass and usually served with cocktail olives.

The James Bond Martini

The James Bond martini appears in his very first book (by Ian Fleming), Casino Royale. In chapter 7, we read:

"A dry martini," he said. "One. In a deep champagne goblet."

"Oui, monsieur."

"Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon-peel. Got it?"

Lillet is a type of Vermouth that you can still find in many stores. Gordon's is a gin. Where most martinis are made with gin, and vodka martinis are just made with vodka, Bond wildly mixes them both up.

By shaking it, you make the drink cold, which is key for most vodka drinks to taste well. It also mixes the vodka and gin well, giving it a good texture.

The next time you're mixing drinks, try making one shaken and one stirred. See if you can taste the difference!

I prefer the Churchill (as in Winston)

1 bottle good gin
1 bottle vermouth

Place 3 oz of the gin in a shaker over ice. Shake, strain. Look at the vermouth bottle as you drink.
