What is the proper name of the main support beam in the home in the basement?

Yes, it is MAIN SUPPORT BEAM...you just have to emphasize if it is made out of I-BEam (if it is solid steel in that shape) or Concrete (which have reinforcing Bars) or Solid Wood and sometimes called Laminated Timbers.You might also be thinking of the support in the middle of the basement called "CRIB WALL' that looks and works as like beam sometimes.
