My fiance has them for mastitis apparently. I just wanted to know if thats what they were really for because usually she lets me read the medical leaflets. She wasn't keen on breastfeeding, but she said that she would, so I wondered if she had gotten tablets to get rid of her breastmilk.

Furosemide, a 'water pill,' is used to reduce the swelling and fluid retention caused by various medical problems, including heart or liver disease. It is also used to treat high blood pressure. It causes the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

This medicine is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Edema: Furosemide is indicated in adults, infants, and children for the treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and renal disease, including the nephrotic syndrome. Furosemide is particularly useful when an agent with greater diuretic potential is desired.

Hypertension: Oral furosemide may be used in adults for the treatment of hypertension alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. Hypertensive patients who cannot be adequately controlled with thiazides will probably also not be adequately controlled with furosemide alone.

They are usually known as water pills. Usually dispensed for people with high blood pressure. A lot of renal failure patients take this drug also because a lot of the medicine they take causes them to retain water.
