If you combine it with a proper diet then yes it will work. A mile seems like a short distance but that's just me...I like to go for 3 miles about 4 to 5 times a week, but you should do what's best for you.
Just be sure to start out slow and don't overdo it. Exercise isn't supposed to hurt. As your body becomes more accustomed to working out you can then increase your speed, time, and distance. Also adding weight training is good too. It really helps on defining muscles.
But anyway, just be sure to eat right or it will make your time on the treadmill pointless.

900 calories is unhealthily low, especially for a teenager. If you can go for an hour, then keep adding time and go longer. It's even more effective than not eating. Don't focus on distance, focus on time and intensity. If you're going to stick to an hour, go farther each week (17 laps, 17.5, 18 and so on), or go longer (walk/run for 1 hr, 1hr 5 min, 1 hr 10 min). This will burn more calories, and get you in better shape. You should also work in some strength work. Pull-ups, situps, pushups. Don't fixate so much on how much weigh. Just try to make consistent progress. Measure your stomach and arms each week instead of worrying about the scale so much.

I have been walking daily for about 20 mins, doing Pilates 3 times a week, and using my ab ball 3 times a week. I have lost about 12 pounds in about 2 months. I also have stopped drinking soda and watched what I eat. I still have about 35 more pounds to lose but I am determined to lose it.

Walking has helped me. Started out casual pace, slowly picked it up in time. Cut down on food serving sizes too.
Try starting out 20 or 30 minutes a day and increase 5 minutes daily. It isn't the distance, its the time spent that makes the difference.Good luck...

It depends. Some people start to eat more when they begin an exercise program (because burning calories makes you hungry). So be careful how much you eat.
But even if you gain weight, exercise is good for your heart!
