Clone's suggestion:

"Eliminate all the pay per view events - What happened to boxing on ABC Saturday afternoons? Why would the casual fan pay for a fight when they don't know who the boxers are? You have to reel them in with good fights and establish a following first. The NFL has the most followers, and even they put it on free TV."

This might just be the solution to the heavyweight problem in America.

It can be, but changes must be made that promotors are probably unwilling to make.

1 Eliminate all the pay per view events - What happened to boxing on ABC Saturday afternoons? Why would the casual fan pay for a fight when they don't know who the boxers are? You have to reel them in with good fights and establish a following first. The NFL has the most followers, and even they put it on free TV.

2 Eliminate these paper belts - have the three main Championship belts and that's it. It will validate a true champion.

3 Develop a scoring system or a way to avoid subjectivity among the judges, so fights cannot be fixed or presumed to be

4 Promote the boxers in a positive way. NASCAR always had a bad rap as a redneck sport, but are now among the most respected and popular 'atheletes'

That's really not a fair question. Just because Americans don't have a heavyweight world champion or anyone talented in that weight class at the moment doesn't mean the division is not decent now and that it won't be in the future. Granted, there is a slight crisis at this time but all four champions are excellent fighters, Wladimir Klitschko is right along side the all time greats and he will in my opinion be the next undisputed champion. There are also some extremely successful and talented young fighters here in Europe such as Ruslan Chagaev, Denis Boytsov, Alexander Dimitrenko, Egon Roth and so on that have incredible potential and will make heavyweight division much more interesting soon. So, yes heavyweight boxing is decent right now but it will get much better in near future.

I would say yes. The weight divisions and their prominence is not so much a question as the sport itself. There are far too many belts and weight classes for the sport itself to ever regain the place in the sports arena it once had.

As for the Heavyweights they are no different than any other division, there will be ups and downs, the late 80's to mid 90's gave us Tyson, Evander, Lennox, Klitchko, Tua, Rachman, a late Foreman resurfacing, Michael Moore, Riddick Bowe etc.

Today there is a wealth of talent lerking around the Junior welterweight to 154 range. Legitimate Heavyweights will come along again, they just won't be fighting to unify titles very often or fighting period very often due to the sad nature of the sport and all the promoters issues of today.
