Of course, they are not purebred, and are most commonly lab/shepherd mixes, but if you are not fussy about what kind of dog you get, then that might work. You could also check the local pet stores bulletin boards. Sometimes people giving away dogs will put ads up there. You can check at the animal shelter, too, oftentimes the adoption fee is less than $50. Another source might be www.petfinder.com. They have a searchable database of pets up for adoption, and also have a classified ad section, divided by state.
