I don't like flying, so the first time I flew, I drank a beer before leaving the house and brought a few ounces of Scotch to the airport and drank it just before I boarded the plane. I slept great.

I sleep a lot when I transfer, and believe me, because of work... I travel a lot...
Don't try to get a big party the night before flying, you'll feel very bad and miserable during the flight and the last thing you will do is sleeping... don not drink any coffee and take very little sugar the last 24 hours before boarding.
Eat soft easy food about an hour before and eat on the plain again, then listen to your own music (the one you know that relaxes you!)... when you're almost sleepy change music for a Cd with the sounds of the rain forest... especially rain and mostly rain... make sure there are no pauses in this CD, or big sounds contrasts... the continues relaxing sound with hours of no change, will create the feeling of a save, stable environment and then, before you know, landing is starting... your brain that you're just

I used to be a nervous flyer too. I would take Dramamine and it would help put me to sleep and take care of any motion sickness. Question is - do you WANT to sleep. What time do you get to the USA? If you get here at night, you will be awake at night and too tired to do anything the next day. Just making yourself comfortable will relieve anxiety - I always take off my shoes and put on socks :)
Depending on the plane, they might have individual screens where you can play games or pick your own movie. I was on a flight once where I watched a movie then played about 5 hours of Tetris - nothing makes time go faster then tetris :)
Don't forget a pack of gum.

I agree with OB, no need for drugs and things of that nature. Just stay up for about 36 hours and I promise you won't have a problem sleeping. I did that once and slept from Alaska to St Louis.

I have a co-worker with the same problem, and she thinks there is nothing wrong with taking a low dose sleeping medication just before the flight. It really gives her the added help she needs to rest comfortably. Prayers =)

I don't think being asleep will help solve your anxiety about flying. Perhaps you'd be better with something to help the anxiety, a mild sedative or tranquiliser. I would discuss with my doctor and see if they can recommend anything. I'm not sure the cabin crew would welcome the idea of somebody who's put themself to sleep. Imagine if they had to stop somewhere and change planes or something? How would they move you?

Here are two suggestions that work for me:
Take a Tylenol PM or two.
Buy one of those pillows that prop up your neck. Brookstone has some (brand name is Nap or something like that). They are very soft and really light weight and wrap around your neck.

I popped 2 dramamine before a flight and fell asleep during takeoff! That stuff really knocks you out.

Problem is that most of those flights are daytime, its hard to sleep. Ask your doctor for an Rx for an anxiety medication; nothing wrong with that.
