My husband and I have 4 children, ages 27, 24, 21, and 9. Most definitely we have spent more money on them from age 16 and up. Our 27 year old is finally in a secure job, married to a man we like who also has a secure job and we've breathed a sigh of relief over that. This is our first semester in 9 straight years that we have not had to pay all or part of college tuition for one or more kids, helped with books, or helped buy a dependable car for a commuting student. The first giant expense is when your first child gets their driver's license and your insurance premiums at least double. We've bailed kids out of financial blunders (fortunately never had to bail one out of jail!), paid medical bills for kids without insurance, helped with car repairs, and made payments "just until next payday". They've cost us many thousands of dollars, but we wouldn't have it any other way. We love our kids and are more than glad to help them in any way we can. The 3 oldest ones have become quite responsible, productive members of the adult world and we have high hopes for our 9 year old as well.

It depends if you have them in Daycare or not. Daycare can cost up to $14,000 per year and there are no scholarships or grants for that. Those first 5 years can cost nearly $75,000.
Add that to all the new clothes, furniture, toys, etc.
Fist 5 years have to be the most expensive.

Mine cost more every year. Diapers and formula were cheap in comparison to activity fees, books, clothes, shoes and electronic gifts.

my opinion is birth!!! You don't know how expensive diapers , wipes,clothes,formula,etc.. is plus your not used to spending extra money on those things. so after you get used to spending money on those they just get repacled with other things later in life.
