That happens everywhere.... the variations of a language that is technically the same, but in use sounds different is called a dialect.
For instance, in Boston, Massachusetts alot of people leave off their "R"s and accentuate their words differently than say people from Baton Rouge, Louisianna and people in the UK.... these people are all technically speaking English, but if you put all three in a room for an evening I bet you'd have some pretty funny conversations.
This happens because of the influences of other cultures and other languages. upon these areas... the Irish immigrants who popluated Boston, the French who lived in Louisianna and the many peoples whom have influenced parts of the UK, like the Romans, the Celts, the French and the Norse.
Nowadays our accents are not nearly as extreme as they once were. The world is growing smaller because of the ease of transportation to so many different places. Also thanks to technology, we can communicate with people from all over the globe in an instant.
People used to be more isolated so they were strongly influenced by the people who lived in their town or village, but now we can experience so many cultures just by driving to work, going to the city or going to college. The mere fact that you can recognise other accents is proof of their influence on you and just having heard other people speaking differently will effect the way you communicate with others.
Even within the same town and in the same family, people will speak differently.... so when magnified to the size of a nation or a continent, there will naturally be differences, but what those differences are depends on societal influences.

because along time ago areas were cut off from one another and some changed whilst others didn't or changed differently. also countries conquered certain areas and not others and passed on culture and breed there.
