We just got a new puppy, a black lab mix, she's about 3 months old and she wants to chew on everything! Even the edges of the carpet. I sprayed it with Bitter Yuck stuff, but she still chews on it. We give her raw hide chews all the time but she goes thru them like candy.

She also nips at us (not hard) when we get after her for misbehaving... how do we get her to stop do it, she only does that more when we start to get after her, and she'll bark at us too.

This puppy is exhibiting fairly normal behavious for puppies this age. She's only going to get worse when she starts teething so you have to control this now. She needs more than rawhides, especially if they're the thin sticks - she needs things of different textures to chew on - try a kong, maybe a braided rope, a ball to chase, larger rawhides.

How do you correct her for misbehaving? If you hit her, you're only going to make her worse. You need to let her know that all humans are her pack leader. When she nips, firmly tell her no, don't yell - that will only get her more excited. Replace your hand with a toy she can chew. Be consistent - it's her age but you can't let her stay this mouthy.

If she barks at you when you correct, tell her no for that too. Withdraw your attention from her, don't pet or play with her unless and until she's calmer. She's old enough you can teach her to sit. Go slow at first cause she is still a baby, but do get her in the habit of obeying commands. If she misbehaves, tell her to sit, give lots and lots of praise immediately for good behaviour. You have to be consistent and she'll learn. Good luck

When you are leaving the puppy unattended, she should be kenneled or if no kennel, apply a muzzle. She can still drink, but won't be able to do much damage while wearing a well-fitted muzzle. This can break her habit rather quickly. Also, if she is too interested in the edge of the carpet, you can spray some vinegar to the edge. (spot test the carpet in an inconspicuous area for color fading). Keeping a spray bottle of bitter apple is wonderful to have on hand when she is caught chewing on a forbidden item. One spray to the mouth and she'll drop it and leave it. Then reward her with a treat or even just kind words. Good luck.

If she is really going through the raw hide chews you should give her the harder plastic and rubber chews. The rawhide can be bad for them if they are eating them quickly.

I had a chewer who would chew everything. I just kept giving him things he could chew on and scolding him when he chewed things that weren't his. A rolled up newspaper on the nose does wonders. They don't like the sound. I could smack with my hand and he just thought I was playing but a tap with a newspaper or something else that rattles and makes noise when you smacked him and he would realize he was being disciplined. He quickly learned to chew only on his toys and eventually grew out of the chewing phase but not until he was three or four.

Good luck!
