A person can be very intelligent and have terrible manners.
Some people are intelligent and too lazy to expand their vocabulary so they have less vulgar options.
The rest just use profanity for shock value, like it's some novelty.
News flash: profanity in unwarranted situations or in gentle company is never acceptable and makes people look ignorant and/or beligerent.
Even the FCC allowable 'dirty' words aren't necessary in most conversations.
Don't misunderstand, if I fall down the stairs I would probably let out a good string of nasties, but I won't use those words in front of anyone other than my closest contemporaries.

Well, sometimes the more colorful language is the only way to adequately express the level of passion you feel toward a certain topic.
Why do intelligent people insist on criticizing other people for their choice of words when the words are used in proper context? I think that may be due to their need to find any possible means available to make themselves appear superior to others. They may also just have control issues. Insisting people use the vocabulary the listener wants to hear. . . Yes, it's definitely a control issue.

I find this to be very true. Many intelligent people I know swear all the time. I know one of the Deans at Oakland University in Michigan and he swears all the time, to the point where you want to leave. He just uses it in every day conversation. Then other intelligent people I know are the same way. It is annoying to me. Maybe it is like, hey I am your authority so you cant have an opinion about what I say. I dont know what it is, but I think they would sound more intelligent if they quit or held it to a minimum.

Because foul language helps to enhance what would otherwise be dull speech. Nothing explains a bad situation better than actually saying that the situation is F-ed up. Foul language tends to bring a sense of universality to being descriptive and even though it should not be used as a substitute for expressing oneself it can still be used as method for enhancing the dialect and verbage of someone who is already properly expressing themselves.

It's only really "foul" if it offends you.
Look at Lewis Black.
Sometimes intelligent people get pissed off and want to say F***!!!
Intelligent people don't have to be pretentious ALL the time.

I agree with rickster. What is intelligent to you may not be intelligent to me or vice versa. I think the use of profanity defines the level of passion a person feels about the situation. For example:
For the life of me, I can't understand why you would put up with your husbands abuse.
For **** sakes, I can't fuc king understand why your a ss would fuc k'n put up with that d i c k head you call your husband and his
fuc ked up ways.
