I have a product that was tested and set to certain values. A few weeks later, the product was powered and found to have downloaded ROM defaults. Locations for which there were no ROM defaults had all FFs.

EEPROM = Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM. If you didn't electrically erase it, it should be fine. Sounds like operator error. Try again and make sure you don't go over the allowable programming cycles.

If the device is properly programmed, it should stay programmed. Some PROMs are erased by ultraviolet light (they have a small quartz window to admit the light), but that does not sound like your stuff. I prefer the idea that an erase signal somehow got into your PROMs and erased them.

You may have a problem with the prom programmer; it may not be providing the right voltage profile to program the cells (maybe not enough voltage for long enough time). The cells may program at first, but may not be fully charged, in which case they may deprogram rapidly.

1. niche SW bug.
2. defective part
3. Operator error.
