Even Jesus drank wine. Where in the Bible does it say excess means a single drop? What's the idea behind making laws that forbid other people from buying drinks?

Catholics, you can skip this question.

No problem here. Jesus drank it at the last supper, and he made it rather abundant at the wedding at Cana for others to drink (it never says he drank it, but one may assume he did). The blue laws are rediculous, I agree. Religious people have every right not to buy alcohol on Sun., but non religious people shouldn't also have to follow the same statute. A little blurring of church and state there I think. It's all about moderation in the end though.

erm... guess what. Not all Christians have issues with alcohol. I see nothing wrong with a glass of wine here or a drink there... the only thing I see an issue with is becoming drunk, and everybody knows that is sort of common sense as being drunk can leave you doing things that get you in trouble or things you'd think better of if you were sober (as in getting pregnant by a guy you don't even know, losing your head and getting in a fight or getting behind the wheel, crashing your car and accidently killing someone). And its for that reason the Bible encourages sobriety (notice, not abstinence, sobriety). Some Christians feel that its best to not even go near alcohol because of the affects it can have on people if you get drunk. Others are okay as long as you watch yourself and make sure you're not being stupid about it. Oh, and that last viewpoint is a viewpoint a lot of OTHERS believe too, even if they're an atheist.

There are two reasons why I don't drink alcohol.

First of all, I see first hand from members of my family and also the people I support in my line of work, the devastation which it can cause. Some people have addictive personalities, and is hooked very quickly on alcohol from a very young age.

Secondly, the Bible speaks about staying away from the appearance of evil. By me drinking alcohol I could be a stumbling block to someone else.

These are my personal views - its up to each Christian how they feel about it.

I agree with you though that the Bible does not state not to drink wine or alcohol, in fact, Paul took a little wine for his stomach's sake.

I choose not to drink at all because I used to have a problem with it. However, the Bible just says not to become drunk or you'll become like a man who swings punches into the air and stagger around and wake up with bruises that you don't remember getting. (I'm clearly paraphrasing) Can you have a glass of wine with dinner? Sure. The body God created for you even benefits from it. However getting drunk damages your body and can lower your inhibitions and allow you to do some really stupid things you wouldn't do otherwise. It seems the Bible lines up with medicine once again.

Drinking wine or other in moderation I don't have a problem with. But I am a Catholic and I currently see many examples of what excess can do to you in the nursing home where I work.

I don't have a problem with alcohol. Jesus Christ drank wine. The problem I have is Drunkeness. or over drinking. The bible even says that overeating, or glutony, is a sin. It's kind of one in the same.

Alcohol is not the problem, the problem is being drunk. It's one thing to have a beer at the game or a glass of wine with dinner and another to drink until your out of control.

Davlynark, he did drink wine, its in Mathew. But he did not get drunk. Usually, when people buy drinks, that is their intention. (to get drunk) but Jesus did it to show his power,, and i think He meant that wine is not bad unless u use it too much. Like TV is good, but 20 hrs of TV a day will make u abnormal

I don't think social drinking is a sin, but I used to be a heavy drinker and now won't touch the stuff. The reason many Christians are against liquor is for the sake of people like me who may be tempted to fall off the wagon. Paul talked about meat sacrificed to idols, to him it was no big deal, but if his eating it caused one of the saints to stumble then he was vegan for life. It's not religious regulation so much as abstenance for the benefit of a few. Thank you all Christians.

sorry in the bible it actually says we should drink wine as its healthy for the bible. and science has proven this too, where a glass of wine a day is considered healthy.

1 Timothy 5:23
Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
