The 7 Deadly Sins are:

Superbia = hubris/pride, Avaritia = avarice/greed, Luxuria = extravagance/lust, Invidia = envy, Gula = gluttony, Ira = wrath, and Acedia = sloth.

The 7 Virtues are:

Chastisy, Abstinance, Liberality, Diligence, Patience, Kindness, and Humility.

Do you honestly feel, believe that either set of human characteristics is worthy of punishment or accolades? All of us have a little of each within our nature and if acted upon, the result is almost immediate.

If I eat too much, I'll get fat.

If I'm greedy, I'll lose all my friends.

Cause and Effect - plain and simple.

Is there any real need for a deity to govern over what John Lennon described as "instant Karma?"

The so called 7 (deadly) sins & virtues aren't all the sins & virtues. So it is misleading. 7 is the number of completion, rest, blessing, fulfillment, etc...

In Proverbs there are 7 behaviors that God completely hates.

I don't believe John Lennon knew Jesus Christ as his Lord & Saviour before He died. So John Lennon would not be in heaven.

Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess, "Jesus Christ is LORD."

If more people would spend time working on the virtues, rather than arguing the sins we would all be much better off.

And for what it is worth, the 7 Virtues are not limited to those of us who call ourselves religious. They are good HUMAN virtues as well.

Cause and Effect:

More Abstinance = less unwanted pregnancies (and less abortion)
More Patience = less war
More Kindness = less murder

See, it all comes around to good in the end.

The teachings of St. Augustine and St. Ambrose were singularly focused at uneducated heathens that needed to be taught the definintions of those feelgood things they did and which were good and which were bad and why. They seemed to have doen a good job as you have grasped the concepts very well.

You only have to look around at this world to know that if many would practice those virtues this world would be a better place. But if you will look it isn't so.

It is not the characteristics that need to be punished, but failure to overcome the temptation associated with them that angers God.
