The best age to neuter your dog or cat most veterinarians agree that the surgery should be performed between 4 – 6 months of age. Many veterinarians have started to perform spay and neuter surgeries on pets as young as 6 – 8 weeks of age. female cats can get pregnant at the age of 5 months. It's best to check with your vet and see what is right for your kitten.

I've been told "when they are big enough" by the vet, which apparently my 4 month old kitten is, but I would never have it done before 6-8 months old to let them mature and all that. As long as you keep them in and boys away from girls, waiting til 6-8 months, even a year, isn't a bad idea. The bigger the cat the better they handle anesthetics and surgery.

Four to five months of age is a good compromise. Shelter cats are now neutered when they are two months old without further health problems.
Most vets on the "open" market won't do it until six months. Look on the web for: Winn Feline Health Foundation. They did a long-term study of early spay and neutering and deemed it OK.
If your vet hasn't heard of this study he is very out-of-date. INSIST that the neutering be done at four-five months. If he won't, find a vet or humane society clinic that will.

We just recently adopted a kitten and he was about 8 weeks old when we got him...they told us that he had already been fixed! We were kinda surprised about this, but when we took him to the vet they told us and it's prefectly fine to do this

Hte kitten must be at least 3 mo. but too young can cause urinary problems. If they are inside cats, and not too agressive wait until about 6 mo.

6 months and older is a good age to ask the vet to do it

NOW, you want to neuter them before they start to mark their territory. Because once they start to spray then it can be very difficult to break them of it.
