Well it really depends on how much space you have on your house and surroundings and how friendly your cat is. I would say you could buy a golden retriever or a labrador, they are loyal companions, very good with children. The downside is they need a little space to live happily but as long as your kids play with it the dog should be fine.

The best breed from experience would be a staffordshire bull terrier. Just look them up online here and you wont find one bad thing about them. i have one and he is the most loyal dog I have known. The only problem with them is they are a little pricey. Go to www.puppyfind.com and they have a search filter on the left margin that will search a breed by size, upkeep, and purpose(like family pet or farm dog, there is about 10 different) But go there and that should be a good help for you.

Golden Retriever - they are one of the "soft mouthed dogs" bred for picking up things gently with their mouth and being very patient...
Pugs - smaller
Shih Tzu - small but require regular trips to the groomer
get an adult not a pup as pups and young kids dont mix well.. especially when they are teething
make sure your kids behave well and respect the dog.. DO NOT allow them to pull ears, ride the dog, hit it, or yell at it... never leave kids unattended around pets
BEST PLACE TO GET FROM - an animal shelter or SPCA - you can ask for a dog who has lived with cats/kids before..a reputable breeder or rescue
NEVER get from a pet store..
DO NOT GET -
Border collie - very intelligent dogs require ALOT of attention and excercise - the kids will confuse the dog and it will become destructive if not given enough proper direction - if your kids were older this breed would be ok...
Terriers - all terriers were bred for hunting/killing/fighting - so are more risky with kids
Toy dogs - too fragile and too nervous around kids

I would wait until the kids get older. The poor dog will be harrassed by all three kids and the cat will not help. Also, if the dog gets hurt by one of them and bits someone, who is at fault? With three kids to clean up after, looking after a dog will only add to your problems. And don't believe them when they say they will feed and walk a pet. They lie.

I would say a small dog like a beagle, but I really would reccomend a golden retriever or a lab. Golden retriervers are actually "people" dogs, therefore, they are really friendly with children and people. Although, golden retrievers will grow to be a big dog too, but they are one of the most friendliest dogs.

A Lab or Golden, something medium-sized or bigger and gentle..I grew up with a lab mix and he was like my baby-sitter...You defiantly don't want anything small..too easy to be hurt if the kids get rough..labs and goldens are good with cats too if introduced when young..Get a puppy, not an older dog- then the kids and dog can grow up together! They will also wear each other out playing...

I would not recommend a terrior or small dog. i have 4 Italian Greyhounds and they chase cats like crazy. They don't do well with kids and are kinda snappy if a kid was to trip or fal on them. I would recommend a Lab or Golden Retriever.

It all depends on the size of dog your looking into. Shih tzu's are great small dogs, or beagles, They aren't usually nippy and don't yelp a lot. Larger dogs, it all depends. We have a 7 year old pitbull bull dog who is wonderful around the kids, our puppy, and our cat. Labradore's are wonderful with children as well.
