first, if you are swimming around in some form of liquid or another, it's time to change 'em, sweetie... i'd suggest you'd remove them as quickly as possible, to avoid prolonged exposure to the fluids, to avoid irritability of your sensitive areas... a nice pat of powder is nice, also baby oil may be applied... but, then you may wanna get the plastic pants back on, to catch the full effect of it all....

Must be a first timer? Plastic pants are usually put over cloth diapers - is your baby wearing cloth diapers? If you're using disposable then you don't need plastic pants. Cloth diapers are easier to check for wetness, you can just peek inside the plastic pants and see if the cloth is wet. If you're actually using disposable then figuring out if they're wet before you get them most of the way off will take a bit of practice -- you can peek but the best way I know after three kids, plus about 20 daycare kids, is to look at how the diaper fits when you first put it on, it'll be bigger after it absorbs urine.
Good luck!
